Blood & Body Fluid Exposure Protocol

/ Meditech Order/Entry / Tests Performed
Recipient Process: Staff member
Staff who have had a blood or body fluid exposure (includes needle sticks) shall report to the Organizational Health department.
BGH site: Mon – Fri 0800-1600hrs
After hours, on weekends and holidays, staff shall report to the ER department BGH site or Urgent Care at the Willett.

Recipient / Staff that have a blood or body fluid exposure must be registered in the Meditech system and the orders placed under their name and account.

Use Order set:: /BBEER at the Category prompt
Please Note: consent documentation is required for every HIV test. You will be required to delete the HIVBBEER if you do not have documented consent. The HIVBBEER can be ordered separately once consent is obtained.
Answer all Prompt Questions
For “Who is the Inoculum?” enter the “Name” of Inoculum (Patient’s Name) / Hepatitis B Antibodies
(Anti-HBs)
Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV)
HIV recipient (HIVBBEER)
Inoculum Process: Patient
The patient/inoculum also requires bloodwork to be drawn, an order must be obtained for this from the MRP.

The “ordering physician” must be put in as the Occupational Health Physician (Dr. Toby Im) so that OH&S can get the results and provide the appropriate follow-up. The MRP is defaulted in the system and will receive a copy of the patient’s results too.
