AIMS
The College believes that all students on application to the College and whilst on course are entitled to receive the best possible information, qualifications and skills, together with the relevant experiences in order to make informed and realistic decisions about their futures. The College is committed to providing independent, appropriate and up to date careers advice at every stage of the learner’s journey.
In this context, Governors and staff seek to provide Careers Education and Guidance through:
1.Planned experiences, visits, talks and courses.
2.Individual guidance and tutorial support.
3.Providing opportunities to students to develop a range of skills, abilities and interests in order to make and review career plans and evaluate alternatives to a positive destination.
OBJECTIVES
The College is fully aware that increasing students’ employability is at the heart of the whole College curriculum. We will seek to embed this in its curriculum, processes and quality structures (e.g. Behaviour policies/Schemes of work/ Lesson observation /Tutorial programme/ Study programmes - including opportunities to engage with the local community) in order to achieve positive destinations for all our learners.
- Management
To ensure:
- A written policy exists as a working document.
- A CollegeProgress Manager is assigned to lead on careers education.
- A clear line management structure exists with each student assigned to a named Student Progress Manager taking responsibility for Careers Education.
- That training needs of staff involved in delivering careers education are met.
- Effective communication exists between careers staff, including staff from the National Career Service (Prospects), and students.
2. Resources
To ensure
- There are designated funds available for careers education.
- There are adequate resources and facilities.
- That information is classified and clearly displayed.
- Partnerships between Careers Departments, College Governors, Universities, Industry and Commerce and NCS are fostered.
- New developments in Careers Education are incorporated where appropriate into the College programme.
3. Quality
- The Careers programme shall be regularly evaluated, through individual staff reviews and the College self-assessment process.
- Destinations of College leavers will be tracked and a report published and presented to governors.
4. Careers Education
- Students and parents should have access to information, about University courses, employment and training including Apprenticeships, finance and application procedures.
- Students should be aware of the various avenues of help and sources of information available to them including independent careers advice from an independent advisor.
- Student’s career plans will be developed in line with the equality and diversity policy.
- Students with disabilities will be assisted in the transition process by the named co-ordinator of Student Support Services.
- Students will be provided with opportunities to disclose any disability which may affect their future opportunities.
Pre course Entitlement.
All Year 11 students and their parents in the local area will receive:
- An invitation to two College Open Evenings.
- College attendance at careers events in schools All applicants will receive:
- an individual guidance interview pre GCSE results;
- an invitation to College Taster days;
- Opportunity for individual guidance interview post GCSE results;
- A further individual guidance interview at enrolment.
On Course Entitlement
- An assigned Personal Tutor;
- A Tutorial programme including planned sessions on careers information and guidance;
- An individual learning plan to include career planning;
- At least one 1-1 meeting with the Personal Tutor per half term;
- Access to an assigned Student Progress Manager;
- On site access to a specialist careers adviser;
- Access to specialist careers resources in the College library / study centres;
- Support from Personal Tutors and Student Progress Manager through the UCAS process including an academic reference;
- Students on specialist vocational courses to have support in seeking relevant course-related work experience;
- Students and, where appropriate, their parents should have access to specialist careers events and support from external sources, including events relevant to HE access/HE finance, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
