Course Description

Welcome to our class. This course is a ninth grade level support English class at La Quinta High School. The focus of our class will be working on the critical skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, to guide us to the mastery of the ninth gradeCommon Core English Language Arts Standards.

Classroom Expectations

  • Be respectful
  • Be quiet while the teacher is talking.
  • Be on task
  • Be prepared for class each day (books, pens, paper, student planner).
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices must be put away and silenced.

Consequences for Misbehavior

  • 1st violation: Verbal warning from Ms. Lukason
  • 2nd violation: Individual conference and 15 minutes detention
  • 3rd violation: Phone call to parent/guardian, 30 minutes detention
  • 4th violation: Referral to Assistant Principal, behavior contract and 30 minutes detention

Misbehavior deemed severe by Ms. Lukason will be dealt with on a case by case manner and may include: immediate removal from class, a phone call to the parent, and a conference with the Assistant Principal.

Forward Binder

Students will need to keep a 1-inch or larger, 3-ring binder of their work throughout the semester. The binder will be checked periodically for organization and completion of work. The binder will include labeled tabs:

Tardy Policy

Students are tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings. Tardies are cumulative by semester. Detentions will be assigned for students with more than 1 or habitual tardies. Please refer to student handbook for complete school tardy policy.

School wide tardy sweeps will also be conducted throughout the school day to ensure students are getting to class on time. If a student is caught in a tardy sweep, he/she will receive a detention.

Academic Dishonesty is defined as:

  • Submitting for class credit any project or material which is partially or totally the work of someone else, including copying papers, homework assignments or a test.
  • Preparing work for another student or giving/lending assigned work to another student who will represent this work as his/her own.
  • Communication with anyone other than the teacher during a test, including giving or receiving verbal, written, or visual aid.
  • Willfully exchanging (receiving or disclosing) information as to the content of the test with any other student who will be taking the test in another class or section.
  • Using the Internet as a means to copy work or post work for other students to copy.
  • Plagiarism in any form, including plagiarism committed by a member of a group in which the group is responsible for the assignment. In such a case all members of the group have violated the cheating policy.

Consequences for Academic Dishonesty

On the first offense the student will:

  • Have a one day on campus suspension and a parent conference
  • Receive 0 points without possibility of make up on the assignment

The following types of dishonesty will result in a one-day suspension at home, parent conference and a “Withdraw/F” on the first offense:

  • Illegally obtaining an examination
  • Illegally obtaining and using a teacher’s edition to complete class assignments or homework
  • Changing a grade in a teacher’s grade book or computer

On the second offense, and any future offense in a high school career, the student will:

  • Have a one-day on campus suspension and a parent conference
  • Be dropped from the class with an ‘F’

All students and parents must sign the Academic Honesty Policy each year.

Grading Policy

All work is to be completed on time. Late work will be accepted for students that have been in attendance, but will receive half credit. If you have an excused absence, you will have the number of days missed to complete your assignments for full credit. If you are absent on the day of a scheduled test or quiz you should be prepared to take that test or quiz upon your return. It is the student’s responsibility to check the Agenda Box for missed work and ask Ms. Lukason if they have any questions.

Grading Scale

A 90-100%; B 89-80%; C 79-70%; D 69-60%; F below 60%

Practice 10% (homework checked for completion, notebook check, classwork checked for completion)

Formative Assessments 30% (quizzes, graded classwork-independent/group work, presentations, graded homework)

Summative Assessments 60% (tests, final essays, projects, presentations)

Work Habits and Citizenship

In addition to a letter grade, students will receive a “work habits” and “citizenship” grade that is recorded for each quarter on the report card.
