Please read the following information about the conflict in Darfur. It is because of this violence that Kek, the protagonist in Home of the Brave, has lost his father and brother and has moved to the United States to be with his aunt’s family in Minnesota.

The Darfur Conflict is an ongoing civil war centered on the western Darfur region of Sudan. It began in February 2003 when two different armed rebel groups accused the Sudanese government of mistreating the native African people in favor of Arab people living in the region. One side of the conflict is mainly the official Sudanese military and police, and the Janjaweed, a Sudanese group recruited mostly from the Arab tribes of northern Sudan; these tribes are mainly camel herders when they are not fighting. The other side is made up of rebel groups, recruited primarily from non-Arab and native African tribes. Although the Sudanese government publicly denies that it supports the Janjaweed, it has been accused of providing financial assistance and weapons to the group and of participating in joint attacks that target African civilians.

There are different estimates on the number of people who have died because of this conflict, ranging from under twenty thousand to several hundred thousand, from either direct combat or starvation and disease due to the conflict. Millions of people have been forced into refugee camps or over the border as well.

The Sudanese government and the rebel groups they have been fighting signed a ceasefire agreement in February, 2010, with a tentative agreement to pursue further peace.

Please record your thoughts, reactions, and questions about the information above. You will be learning more about the conflict in Darfur this year in your social studies class! ______
