Syllabus
Study Skills
2016-2017
Students will need a one-inch binder labeled “Study Skills” as well as highlighters, pens, and pencils.
Handouts serve as the textbook, so students MUST keep up with them. They should be in the Study Skills binder each day when arriving to class. If handouts are lost it will be the student’s responsibility to bring money (a dime per page) to copy it in the Media Center. Points will be deducted every day the student is missing the handout. More detail about this is given below.
Grading – Quizzes will be given on the handouts and on the worksheets given on Organization Check days. The quizzes will most often be short answer or multiple choice. They may also include practical applications specific to a given unit, such as completing an outline or a web. Another very important part of the Study Skills grade will be the Organization Check.
Organization Checks – These will be given every other week, beginning with the second week of school. The class will be divided in half with half receiving their check on Thursday and the other half on Friday. During Organization Checks the students will practice skills we have been studying in class. These practice sheets will be graded. The Organization Each category will equal 25 points for a total of 100 points.
The rubric is as follows:
· Subject binders will be checked to make sure each is well organized and contains only papers pertaining to that subject. For example, math papers should not be in the social studies binder, etc.
· The book bag will be opened and checked to be sure it is free of crumpled paper and junk. Book bags should NOT be used as trash cans for old papers, tests, etc. All textbooks must be brought to class and will be checked for covers. Textbooks should not be used as a “filing system” for homework or other papers.
· The agenda will be checked to ensure that homework is entered every day. Homework MUST be recorded carefully and should include daily homework assignments as well as upcoming tests and projects. If no assignment is given in a class on a particular day the word “none” should be entered.
· The final category is a guaranteed 25 points UNLESS the student has forgotten the handout during some class periods. Points will be deducted off the next Organization Check for every day the student comes to class unprepared.
