Problem / Points Possible / Points Earned
1. Measure the doll shoes below in centimeters to determine the size of each of their shoes.
Tammy’s Shoe____6 centimeters___
Allen’s Shoe ____9 centimeters___ / 2
2. Tammy thinks her doll shoe is 10 centimeters smaller than Allen’s doll shoe. Do you agree or disagree with Tammy? Explain your thinking.
Sample Student Response…
I do not agree with Tammy. Her doll shoe is 6 cm and Allen’s doll shoe is 9 cm. That is a difference of 3 centimeters. Allen’s shoe would have to be 7 centimeters longer to make Tammy’s statement true. / 2
3. John wanted to compare the length of his shoe with the length of Kelly’s shoe. He plotted the measurements of each shoe in centimeters on the number line below. Use the number line to determine the difference between the measurements.
/ 1
4. Explain how you used the number line to determine the difference between the lengths.
I started at 23 because that is how long Kelly’s shoe is. Then I counted back until I got to 17 which is how long John’s shoe is. Then I counted the jumps which got me a difference of 6. 23 – 17 = 6.
Teacher Note: A student could also count up to get to 6 which is also an acceptable answer. / 1
