JOB SUMMARY

The Behavioral Intervention and Support Specialist is responsible for the direct care and supervision of children, providing a safe environment while working on implementation of behavioral and permanency goals. Care and supervision may be provided in a variety of settings, including staffed residential homes, foster homes, family homes, and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors Degree in Social Work or closely allied field, or a High School Diploma with two years related experience in an applicable field. Must maintain background clearance and acceptable driving record.

JOB SKILLS/EQUIPMENT

Good communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work with a diverse client/family population in a variety of settings. Must be willing to take direction in development of behavior management and crisis resolution skills. Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Ability to assess and manage challenging/crisis situations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of the program philosophies, policies and procedures, as well as remaining current in knowledge of all individual support plans. (C)
  • Provide support and direction to all children in achieving individual treatment goals and program expectations. (C)
  • Plan for, direct, and/or provide support for recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities that are in alignment with treatment and permanency goals. Ensure supervision and safety during activities in a variety of settings. (F)
  • Use of positive behavior support and behavior modification techniques. Model effective conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. (C)
  • Intervention in dysfunctional and/or unsafe interactions involving children. (C)
  • Use of therapeutic de-escalation and physical intervention skills (per SECURE) as needed to maintain and re-establish a safe environment. (F)
  • Instruct and assist children in self-care skills/tasks, including personal care (as needed). (C)
  • Dispense medication (as needed), and complete related documentation (*WA and OR staff only). (O)
  • Complete all required documentation according to individual program procedures and timelines. (F)
  • Communicate with other team members on an ongoing basis, both verbally and through written means (communication log, etc.). (C)
  • Provide support to children and families at times that best meet their needs; may necessitate working evenings and weekends. (O)
  • Participate in on-call support to families, as required by individual program needs. (O-F)
  • Keep all required training certifications current (SECURE, CPR/First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.). (O)
  • Work cooperatively with families, foster parents, school district professional, DCFS/DLR personnel, staff from other agencies, etc. (F)
  • Act as a professional representative of Service Alternatives. (C)
  • Additional duties as required by position, and/or supervisor/program manager (will vary across program settings). (F)
  • Assist in maintaining professional working environments (office, personal work space, company car, etc.). (F)
