Dear Headteacher’s name>,

Help support our continued success!

The search is on for a new Group Scout Leader (GSL) for <Group Name> Scouts, and we need you to think about anyone you know who would thrive in this role! We know that teachers make some of our most successful volunteers in Scouting, and as educators, recognise the importance of helping young people develop skills for life.

Scouting in <District name> and the surrounding area

There are just over <number> young people aged 6-25 and approximately <number> adult volunteers involved in Scouting in <District name> and the surrounding area.

Adult volunteers are crucial for the development and growth of the Scouting movement. We currently have a vacancy for a Group Scout Leader. This role acts as a Group manager, supporting other volunteers to ensure the Group runs effectively and provides quality Scouting to more and more young people in <District name> and the surrounding area. This role suits both an individual and also role share with a team of 2 or 3 people.

It is not necessary to have been involved in Scouting previously, we can teach people all they need to know about the organisation. The time commitment for this type of role really depends on the individual and can be flexible to fit around other commitments.

How you can help

Do you know someone who:

■can inspire and enthuse

■applies strategic thinking to a challenge

■could build and lead a team of key volunteers

■is resourceful and energetic

■believes in developing young people and volunteers in your area?

Please could we ask that you display the enclosed literature and a copy of this letter for staff to view? If you think the information would be better and easier for you to distribute in another format or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. It would be great if you could also pass this information on to your PTA and board of governors (alternatively, if you could provide us with their details we could contact them directly).

We would be more than happy to send a representative to talk to interested employees about volunteering for the Scout Association and if this is something that would be useful please get in touch on <telephone number> or <email address>. For more information please visit or <local website>

Skills and benefits

Volunteering with us is not only fun and rewarding, but also offers the opportunity to develop a range of skills and attributes which are transferable to the workplace, such as confidence, social skills, teamwork ability and leadership and management skills, including line management experience. In addition to this is the opportunity to rediscovering adventure, make new friends and get involved in the community; all of which is great for personal development and will enhance the CV.

Nationally, over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives. Training in Scouting has also enabled volunteers to gain accreditation for Open College Network awards in Youth Work, and helped them to become associate members of the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Institute for Training and Occupational Learning.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Yours sincerely
