Course Description:

Integrated Mathematics II is the second mathematics course in the integrated pathway, following Integrated Mathematics I and preceding Integrated Math III. This year we will focus on 12 topics (outlined below). In each of these topics, we will focus on applying mathematics to the real world. My goal is for all students to experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. The most important skills that we will improve through this course will be to 1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, 2) Reason

abstractly and quantitatively, 3) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, 4) Model with mathematics, 5) Use appropriate tools strategically, 6) Attend to precision, 7) Look for an make use of structure, and 8) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Textbook: Carnegie Learning Integrated Math II, 3rd Edition

Required Materials:

1.  Notebook or 3 ring binder

2.  Pencil only

3.  Textbook (IM2)

4.  Headphones (To be used on select days for academic purposes, 99 cents store?)

5.  Calculator

·  I encourage you to buy a scientific calculator from the 99 Cents store for home use

·  A calculator will be provided for classroom use.

CHAPTER 12: Introduction to Quadratic Functions

CHAPTER 13: Polynomials and Quadratics

CHAPTER 14: Solving Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

Classroom Procedures:

Students will have many assignments and activities to complete each day, including note taking, discussions, computer applications, skills practice, group and individual projects. Students are responsible for completing and turning in all assignments when due. Categories of assignments are:

Do Now: This will always be the opening activity when you come in. Students are to work individually and quietly unless the Do Now is a group activity.

Participation: Students learn better when they are engaged in daily class activities. Participation in class discussions and problem solution strategies is important. Students will be expected to participate on a daily basis.

Homework: Homework will be given every Monday & will contain the work for the days Monday thru Thursday. Completed homework will be stamped every day for all homework that is due. Homework will be collected on Friday or the following Monday (depends on block).

Notebooks/Binders: Which one do you prefer? Pick one. Notebooks or binders are for notes, class handouts and activities. They will be checked every 4 weeks; due dates will be announced. Model notebooks and binders will be provided.

Quizzes and Tests: Quizzes will be given throughout a unit to monitor progress. They may or may not be announced. Tests will always be announced well in advance. An excused absent student is responsible for making an appointment to make up the missed quiz/test before school (7am) or during Mr. Nunez’ conference period (period 3).

Final Exams: Students will take a comprehensive exam at the end of each semester.

Grading Policy:

4 pts. – A – Proficient/Mastery

3 pts. – B– Basic/Strong Understanding

2 pts. – C – Below Basic/Partial Understanding

1 pt. – NP– Far Below Basic/Little to No Understanding

Restroom Policy:

Students may not use the restroom during the first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes of class; use the restroom before entering the classroom.

Students will receive 3 restroom passes per semester and any unused passes can be redeemed for extra credit.

Only exceptions will be a note from a doctor requesting a different personal policy.

Cell Phone and Food Policy:

Absolutely no food and cell phones will be used in class unless instructed to for academic purposes.

Only bottled drinks allowed.

First violation will result in one verbal warning (food in trash & cell phone put away). Second violation will result in cell phone confiscation, returned at the end of the period, and parent notification. Continuous violations will result in parent/administration conference.

A Final Comment….

I expect the classroom to be an environment where everyone will be able to learn. This is OUR classroom and we are family. I want each of you to be committed to making this classroom a place we all want to be, where we will grow into the successful people we wish to be in the future. This means following the class expectations and procedures, being active participants, and behaving as mature, young adults. If you have any concerns, or need extra help, come see me after class, after school, or during tutoring hours. If I am constantly trying to find different ways to help you, and it might annoy you at times, just know that I care about you and I will do anything to make sure you reach your goals.
