Teacher In-service 8/17/10
During the Collier County Public School teacher back-to-school in-service we were invited to introduce OrganWise Guys to the K, 1 and 2 teachers from the schools where we are teaching their health class. The creator and President of OrganWise Guys, Inc. came, at no cost, to show them all the fun aspects they can use in their classroom. The researcher who has published the journal articles about the program’s success was also here to tell them about outcomes achieved at other schools, and what they can expect. I presented the strategy and logistics of getting to each classroom once per month.
School Nutrition Managers In-service (8/16/10)
The OrganWise Guys (OWG) curriculum includes a food service component. We were invited to speak with the Nutrition Managers at their back-to-school meeting at the District. We gave an overview of the classroom program and how their Food of the Month campaign reinforces classroom learning. They were given OWG Food of the Month kits, paid for by the WK Kellogg Foundation.

“Calculation of economic value of trained volunteers’ contribution to extension programs: According to 2008 Florida data from the Independent Sector (http://independentsector.org/programs/research/volunteer_time.html) the estimated dollar value of a volunteer hour is $18.20 (this includes estimated fringe benefits, update this value yearly and the values used for each year should be reported individually). In Extension, trained volunteers are contributing to Extension programs by dedicating their time, skills, talent, and expertise under supervision or guidance by faculty.”

A. Situation
Collier County has seen significant changes in population, demographics and income levels during recent years. An example of the loss of income can be best shown by the rate of foreclosure. There were 487 foreclosures in 2005, 733 in 2006, and 3,267 in 2007. There were 6,685 foreclosures between October 2007 and October 2008.
The economic situation can also be dramatically shown by reviewing Food Stamp (SNAP) client numbers. In March 2006 there were 8,788 Food Stamp clients. By 2010 the number of participants had grown to 31,206. 41% of the children in Collier County live in low income households. In Florida 7% of the children live below the poverty level. In Collier County17.5% of those under age 18 were below the poverty level.
The Collier County low-income preschool obesity rate is one of the highest in Florida. Collier County Public Schools provides free meals for those eligible and for those who qualify for reduced price meals also receive their meals free. The school district is directing attention to health and nutrition in the schools located in areas of poverty. The 8 schools where FNP is teaching this year have free/reduced price participation rates of 92% up to 98.8%.
Target audience: Children, parents, pregnant teens and women, elders and general adults who are eligible or participating in Food Stamps (SNAP).
B. Program Objectives
By September 30, 2011 40% of FNP participants will report one or more positive nutrition-related behavior changes.
C. Educational Methods and Activities
FNP has just begun in Collier County, starting with the hiring of this agent October 30, 2009. Two Program Assistants have been hired to teach nutrition. The primary program was developed in conjunction with the Public Schools of Collier County. FNP teaches a monthly nutrition-related class during Health Class period at 8 schools for all kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. 154 teacher volunteers teach related follow-up nutrition classes. Teaching is done incorporating hands-on activities, food demonstrations and visual representations.

33. THE FURTHER INFORMATION SECTION
As previously mentioned, Collier County Extension FNP is new this year. A significant amount of time was spent building relationships in the public school system. This resulted in an impressive agreement with the district to teach in 8 schools. FNP teaches every K, 1st and 2nd class each month. Having a formal agreement makes planning and scheduling more focused.
We are in early discussion stages for the next program year, beginning October 2011. That plan will be developed next month and completed in February. Next program year more detailed plans, objectives and outcome measurement will be implemented. October 2009 through September 2010 was a “test run” in many ways, and we are off to a great start.
Note: The agent suffered a fall in January which resulted in time spent in physical therapy, doctor visits, surgery in June and recovery. This affected the scope of FNP programming this year.

FNP is new in Collier County. Year 1 marketing has been mainly face-to-face at agencies and partner organizations. E-mail introductions have also opened doors for collaboration. Collier County Extension Agents have also promoted FNP and introduced me to many valuable community members.
