Opening Song: “Marvelous Light”

Into marvelous light I'm running, out of darkness out of shame

Through the cross You are the Truth, You are the Life, You are the Way

I once was fatherless, a stranger with no hope. Your kindness wakened me, wakened me from my sleep

Your love it beckons deeply, a call to come and die

By grace now I will come and take this life, take Your life

Sin has lost its power, death has lost its sting, from the grave You've risen, victoriously

Into marvelous light I'm running, out of darkness out of shame

Through the cross You are the Truth, You are the Life, You are the Way

My dead heart now is beating, my deepest stains now clean

Your breath fills up my lungs, now I'm free, now I'm free (repeat)

Song of Praise: “Come Praise and Glorify”

Come praise and glorify our God, the Father of our Lord

In Christ He has in heav'nly realms His blessings on us poured

For pure and blameless in His sight, He destined us to be

And now we've been adopted through His Son eternally

To the praise of Your glory, to the praise of Your mercy and grace

To the praise of Your glory, You are the God who saves

Come praise and glorify our God, Who gives His grace in Christ

In Him our sins are washed away, redeemed through sacrifice

In Him God has made known to us the myst'ry of His will

That Christ should be the head of all, His purpose to fulfill

Come praise and glorify our God, for we've believed the Word

And through our faith we have a seal, the Spirit of the Lord

Until we join in endless praise to God the Three in One

Scripture Lessons

The Bible is at the heart of our worship, because in it we read and understand the very words of God. Every word in the Bible has come from God and is vitally important so that we can know His heart and His truth. Each week during our service, we read a section of the Old Testament, a Psalm, a section from the New Testament, and a reading from the Gospels. If you do not have your own Bible, we would like to give you one as a free gift – please speak to a clergy member or an usher.

The Old Testament: Jeremiah 23:23-29

23Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says theLord. “No, I am far away at the same time. 24Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” says theLord. 25“I have heard these prophets say, ‘Listen to the dream I had from God last night.’ And then they proceed to tell lies in my name.26How long will this go on? If they are prophets, they are prophets of deceit, inventing everything they say.27By telling these false dreams, they are trying to get my people to forget me, just as their ancestors did by worshiping the idols of Baal. 28“Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between straw and grain! 29Does not my word burn like fire?” says theLord. “Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces? The Word of the Lord.

Psalm 82

1God presides over heaven’s court;he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings:
2“How long will you hand down unjust decisions by favoring the wicked?

3“Give justice to the poor and the orphan;uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.
4Rescue the poor and helpless;deliver them from the grasp of evil people.
5But these oppressors know nothing;they are so ignorant!

They wander about in darkness, while the whole world is shaken to the core.
6I say, ‘You are gods;you are all children of the Most High.
7But you will die like mere mortalsand fall like every other ruler.’”

8Rise up, O God, and judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you.

Epistle Lesson: Hebrews 12:1-14

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.2We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joyawaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.3Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people;then you won’t become weary and give up.4After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin. 5And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of theLord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. 6For theLorddisciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” 7As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?8If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.9Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever? 10For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.11No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. 12So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees.13Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong. 14Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. The Word of the Lord.

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel: Luke 12:49-56

49“I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!50I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished.51Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other!52From now on families will be split apart, three in favor of me, and two against—or two in favor and three against. 53‘Father will be divided against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’” 54Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said,“When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say, ‘Here comes shower.’ And you are right.55When the south wind blows, you say, ‘Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is.56You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times. The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Gospel Hymn Continued: “Refiner’s Fire” (Chorus)

Refiner's fire my heart's one desire is to be holy, set apart for You, Lord

I choose to be holy, set apart for You my Master, ready to do Your will

The Sermon

Nicene Creed

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

This is a time for group prayer as well as personal prayers. Please prayerfully respond to the leader with the words in bold type. And please add your own prayers of thanksgiving and intercession either silently or aloud when invited to do so.

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church and the world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Help us to fulfill your great commission; making disciples of all nations; teaching them to obey all that you have commanded. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Give grace, heavenly Father, to all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and especially to Foley Beach, our Archbishop; Keith Andrews, our Bishop; Fr. Brian and Fr. Don, our Priests; and Dee Renner, our Deacon, that by their life and teaching, they may proclaim your true and life-giving Word, and rightly administer your holy Sacraments. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We ask you to rule the hearts of all who govern us—for our Nation and its leaders. May they administer justice, govern wisely, and strive for the welfare and peace of the whole world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We humbly ask you, gracious Lord, to comfort and strengthen all those who, in this earthly life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

I invite you to add your own thanksgivings or requests at this time.

We bless your holy Name for all your servants who departed this life in your faith and fear, praying you would grant us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we might partake in your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

The Deacon concludes with the following prayer

Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

The Confession and Absolution of Sin

Deacon We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
