Updates from Jane Sinfield Business and Practice Manager

JS informed the PPG that the Long Street surgery was now officially closed. However after 3 letters being sent out to Long Street patients 350 have still not registered with another practice. These remaining patients will be allocated another practice , either Bushloe Surgery or Wigston Central Surgery. Long Street surgery must be completely closed down by the end of February 2017.

All Long Street signage has now been taken down at the Two Steeples medical Centre and their rooms have been allocated to WCS and BS. The overhead running costs of the building are split 49%WCS and 51% BS. WCS has bought new furniture for their newly acquired rooms. It is hoped that these extra rooms can generate income to help with the buildings running costs by being let out to outside medical agencies such as audiology from LRI, Nuffield hospital for outpatients appointments and minor operations. Dr Dover who works at the LRI Dermatology Dept is hoping that dermatology outpatient appointments can take place at Two Steeples Medical Centre.

JS said that WCS now has a patient list size of 12000, the largest list size in Oadby and Wigston.

JS informed the PPG that Dr Kelly Blaze is to leave the practice in March. An advert has gone out for her replacement.

Francis Scott (Scottie) HCA has been employed by WCS to help with the nurses at WCS workload. She was the HCA for LS surgery. Her position will be reviewed in June.

Kelly Benning the new Advanced Nurse Practitioner has settled in well to her role alongside Valerie Murphy, WCS other Advanced Nurse Practitioner. They are both making a difference to the GPs workload .

The CCG has given WCS funding for 8 weeks to provide extra GP emergency appointments from 5.30-6.30pm in order to help ease the workload for the LRI A and E dept. These extra appointments will to date run for another 4 weeks. These extra appointments were advertised on the surgery’s website and the latest PPG newsletter.

JS informed the PPG that the surgery is expecting a CQC inspection before April 2017. The surgery is now preparing for the inspection. JS asked that some of the PPG members who are willing could be asked to speak to the inspectors . 6 inspectors visit the surgery for a full day. Once the date of the inspection is known DR will ask members if they are available to speak to the inspection team.

DR made everybody aware that there is a PPG file behind reception containing all the minutes from previous meetings. This is available for patients to read. A copy of the latest minutes are also displayed on the WCS PPG board on the first floor of the building.

JS was concerned by the very negative comment that was made by a patient about the surgery on the NHS choices website. She has replied to this but was concerned that this patient’s concerns were not discussed with her first so that issues could be resolved.

JW asked about annual health checks. JS replied that the annual health checks for patients with long term problems such asCOPD, asthma, diabetes, learning disabilities, blood pressure, depression etc were all on track. They are carried out throughout the year to ensure that they are all completed by the deadline of the end of March each year. These check ups can take place by phone, home visits and in the surgery.

DR said how helpful and caring receptionist Diane Benning was when fitting her with a blood pressure monitor. DR said Diane was polite and professional and reassuring whilst explaining everything to her. JS asked that this be minuted.

BP asked if AS could do a display board outlining the work the receptionists do on a daily basis – ‘A Day in the Life of a Doctors Receptionist’ AS agreed to do it once she is given the information.

DH asked if it was possible for the surgery to run a light exercise group. JS explained that it would have to be run by somebody qualified to do so and funding would be an issue. Dr MS explained that he could get referred to classes at Parklands Leisure Centre. DR said it would be good practice to have exercise classes in the local area displayed in the surgery on a permanent basis linked to the Get Wise Get Fit Get Healthy campaign the PPG ran last year. DR said that the NHS are constantly sending out health information which needs to be visible to everybody. The PPG needs to help get this information signposted to patients.

JS said there are now some weighing scales located near to the Blood Pressure machine in the surgery for those patients wishing to weigh themselves.

Patient Survey and Questionnaire

Thank you to Anju Maini for sending her patient’s patient questionnaire through as a proforma for DR and AT to use when devising the patient survey for WCS.

DR handed the patient questionnaire round for the PPG members to read and she spoke through the rationale behind the questions.

JW pointed out that people with learning disabilities would find it hard to understand the questionnaire. JW agreed to take the questionnaire to share it those who have learning disabilities in order to help us rephrase and simplify the questions so that it is accessible for them to complete and have their voice heard.

CP asked if the questionnaire could not be sent out to all patients. JS said this would not be cost effective for the number that would be returned completed.

The patient survey is to take place 31.1.17-10.2.17 in the surgery. Members of the PPG were timetabled to hand out the questionnaires to WCS patients. Thank you to all those offering to help .

Medicine Wastage Campaign

AS and DR have put up displays on the ground floor of the medical centre to highlight the problem of medicine wastage. The boards give information on medicine wastage in the UK, how to order repeat prescriptions and what items will no longer be prescribed by a doctor on prescription. Thank you to Darshna (the pharmacist employed by WCS to look at patients repeat prescriptions), for her input and collecting the returned medicine packets for the display. Thanks also to Angela, Sarah and Sharon from the surgery for their contribution and sharing ideas.
