Laptop Cart Procedures

Sign-Up Procedure

CARTS MAY NOT BE SIGNED OUT BY OR FOR A SUBSTITUTE (Year III Science is an exception).
1. To check availability and sign-up for a laptop cart see the teacher who is managing the cart for your hallway. A calendar will be kept with each cart to be used for reservations. If your plans change, let the managing teacher know ASAP so another teacher can use the cart.

*Remember, the carts are on a “first-come, first-serve” basis, use should not be dominated by one staff member. Year III-V Science teachers have priority use of the Science carts.

Pick-Up Laptop Cart

1. Science carts housed in the media center must be picked up by the managing teacher each morning. The teacher who has reserved the cart will pick it up from the managing teacher. Year I and Pod carts will be checked out directly from the managing teacher. There is a cart that may be checked out from the media center and picked up by the teacher using it.
2. NO STUDENT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, MAY TRANSPORT CARTS.

3. Place cart near electrical outlet, out of high traffic areas, and easily accessible (away from obstacles).

4. Individual computers may NOT be shared with another teacher. All computers must remain in the classroom under the supervision of the teacher responsible for the cart for the day.

Review Rules and Distribute Laptops to Students

1.Review the student rules and expectations prior to distribution.
2. If students are to remove laptop from cart individually, have small groups of 2-3 approach the cart at a time based on assigned numbers or small groups.
3. A student must use the same laptop at every session in your classroom. This should promote student responsibility because the computer is attached specifically to his/her name. The laptops are all numbered for easy distribution.
4. Please use the form provided to assign laptops to students for each class period.

5. The key to the cart should be kept in a secure location (teacher pocket, desk drawer, etc.) It should not be left accessible to students.

6. During lunch and planning, the computers can be charged if needed. Plug the two sets of cords into different outlets if possible .

Log-Off and Retrieve Laptops

1.LOG OFF the laptops with five minutes left in the period.

2. Wait until the Login screen appears, close the lid, then you can move the laptop.

3. Only the last class of the day should SHUT DOWN the computers.

4. Each student should personally insert their assigned laptop into the cart. (This allows the teacher to count laptops prior to students leaving the room.)

5. When the laptop is to be returned to the cart, it should be shut down and reconnected to the power cable for recharging.

Returning the Laptop Cart

1. Please take inventory on all cart laptops at the end of each period and at the end of the school day.
2. Check to be sure all computers are plugged in for charging. Each cord is labeled to match the computer.
3. The key should be put back in the cart. Return the cart to the managing teacher no later than 3:30. The cart should never be left in your classroom overnight (exceptions are managing teachers who house the cart).

Reporting Problems and Requesting Maintenance

1.Each class period, ask students to observe any problems with their assigned computer and report to teacher. This process will allow any troubles to be identified more quickly and to narrow the pool of misusers.

2. Report laptop hardware, network connection errors or other technical problems to the managing teacher at the end of the day.

3. The managing teacher will enter the damage or problem in the Maintenance Log which is located on each cart. They will also alert Ms. Marion via email of the problem, identifying the cart, the computer number and the problem.

Special Note

** Failure to comply with the guidelines could result in the revocation of use of the computer (student) or cart (teacher).

Student Laptop Rules

Each teacher must review the Student Laptop Rules document with his/her class prior to implementing the use of the laptops into classroom instruction.

The student rules are as follows:
1. You will use the same numbered laptop every time; you are responsible for this laptop while it is in your possession.
2. When given a laptop, carry it with both hands. When laptops are carried, they should be completely closed, tucked under the arm, and held close to the body.
3. Laptops should not be opened until they are placed safely on a stable surface. Remove books and papers from the workspace area to provide a smooth surface. Do not place near edge of desk of workspace.
4. Carefully open the lid and press the power button (top left corner).
5. Report any problems (including a low battery, missing keys, etc.) to the teacher immediately.
6. Do NOT touch the screen.
7. No food or drink in the classroom or around computers.
8. No game playing, downloading, instant messaging, etc. Doing so can result in the revocation of your computer privilege.
9. Save your work to your student directory/file (not the hard drive or desktop) or a thumb drive.
10. Five minutes before the end of class, LOG OFF.
IMPORTANT: Wait until the login screen appears BEFORE closing the lid.
11. Return the laptop to the cart. (Do not shut down unless you are the last class to use the computers)
