Common Motor Requirements for Plumbing EquipmentME- Building Group
SECTION 220513–COMMON MOTOR REQUIREMENTS FOR PLUMBING EQUIPMENT
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS
- Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY
- This Section includes basic requirements for factory-installed and field-installed motors.

1.3QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, Article100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.
 - Comply with NFPA70.
 - Comply with Chrysler NPEM 105.

1.4COORDINATION
- Coordinate features of motors, installed units, and accessory devices. Provide motors that are:
 - Compatible with the following:
 - Magnetic controllers.
 - Multispeed controllers.
 - Designed and labeled for use with variable frequency controllers, and suitable for use throughout speed range without overheating.
 - Matched to torque and horsepower requirements of the load.
 - Matched to ratings and characteristics of supply circuit and required control sequence.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1MOTOR REQUIREMENTS
- Motor requirements apply to factory-installed motors except as follows:
 - Different ratings, performance, or characteristics for a motor are specified in another Section.
 - Manufacturer for a factory-installed motor requires ratings, performance, or characteristics, other than those specified in this Section, to meet performance specified.

2.2MOTOR CHARACTERISTICS
- Motors 1/2HP and Larger: Three phase.
 - Motors Smaller Than 1/2 HP: Single phase.
 - Frequency Rating: 60 Hz.
 - Voltage Rating: NEMA standard voltage selected to operate on nominal circuit voltage to which motor is connected.
 - Duty: Continuous duty at ambient temperature of 105 degF and at altitude of 3300 feet above sea level.
 - Capacity and Torque Characteristics: Sufficient to start, accelerate, and operate connected loads at designated speeds, at installed altitude and environment, with indicated operating sequence, and without exceeding nameplate ratings or considering service factor.
 - Enclosure: Totally enclosed, fan cooled (TEFC).

2.3POLYPHASE MOTORS
- Description: NEMAMG1, DesignB, medium induction motor.
 - Efficiency: Premium efficiency according to NEMA, unless otherwise specified.
 - Stator: Copper windings, unless otherwise indicated.
 - Multispeed motors shall have separate winding for each speed.
 - Rotor: Squirrel cage, unless otherwise indicated.
 - Bearings: Double-shielded, prelubricated ball bearings suitable for radial and thrust loading.
 - Temperature Rise: Match insulation rating, unless otherwise indicated.
 - Insulation: ClassF, unless otherwise indicated.
 - Code Letter Designation:
 - Motors 15 HP and Larger: NEMA starting CodeF or G.
 - Motors Smaller Than 15 HP: Manufacturer's standard starting characteristic.
 - Enclosure: Cast iron for motors 1.0 hp and larger; rolled steel for motors smaller than 1.0 hp.
 - Frame: TEFC, T-frame unless otherwise specified.

2.4POLYPHASE MOTORS WITH ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Motors Used with Variable Frequency Controllers: Ratings, characteristics, and features coordinated with and approved by controller manufacturer.
 - Designed with critical vibration frequencies outside operating range of controller output.
 - Temperature Rise: Matched to rating for ClassB insulation.
 - Insulation: ClassH.
 - Thermal Protection: Comply with NEMAMG1 requirements for thermally protected motors.

- Rugged-Duty Motors: Totally enclosed fan cooled, with 1.25 minimum service factor, greased bearings, integral condensate drains, and capped relief vents. Windings insulated with nonhygroscopic material.
 - Finish: Chemical-resistant paint over corrosion-resistant primer.

2.5SINGLE-PHASE MOTORS
- Type: The following, to suit starting torque and requirements of specific motor application:
 - Permanent-split capacitor.
 - Shaded-Pole Motors: For motors 1/20hp and smaller only.
 - Thermal Protection: Internal protection to automatically open power supply circuit to motor when winding temperature exceeds a safe value calibrated to temperature rating of motor insulation. Thermal-protection device shall automatically reset when motor temperature returns to normal range.
 - Bearings: Ball type for belt-connected motors and other motors with high radial forces on motor shaft; sealed, prelubricated-sleeve type for other single-phase motors.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
- Prepare for acceptance tests as follows:
 - Run each motor with its controller. Demonstrate correct rotation, alignment, and speed at motor design load.
 - Test interlocks and control features for proper operation.
 - Verify that current in each phase is within nameplate rating.

3.2ADJUSTING
- Align motors, bases, shafts, pulleys and belts. Tension belts according to manufacturer's written instructions. Alignment and start-up report should be submitted as part of an O&M submission.

3.3CLEANING
- After completing equipment installation, inspect unit components. Remove paint splatters and other spots, dirt, and debris. Repair damaged finish to match original finish.
 - Clean motors, on completion of installation, according to manufacturer's written instructions.
