Eggers’ Claim

Eggers’ claim appears in the second paragraph of the essay, college students deserve time off because finals week is stressful and sleep-deprived and they don’t deserve time off because a good deal of the four years of college is spent playing football.

·  He believes that college students have a significant source of free time

·  Because they have free time community service type classes should be offered in college as a substitute class for credit

·  Since college students have a better sense of understanding, they will get a great appreciation out of the work they do, than kids in grade school.

Eggers’ Ground

·  College is too long

o  Students have full course loads

o  Students have part-time jobs, but don’t have to deal with full-time jobs so they have flexible schedules

o  They could use their extra time helping out in the community

·  Time and benefits for college students

o  Less boxed-in by family and extracurricular activities-more free time to devout to other things

o  More mature- able to handle more intense situations

o  At a stage in their life- exposure to service in the community could impact the rest of their lives.

·  Service requirement for graduation

o  Could be just a minimum of at least 10 hours a year

o  Credit- a student could opt for a community service project, instead of a class and have that count as credit towards graduation requirements. What a student would learn from working in a shelter or other situations would greatly equal what they would learn in a classroom.

·  He concludes the essay with

o  Students have to fill requirements for this many science classes, and so many of these classes

o  Teachers give students the intellectual knowledge for after college but ignore how they might go about making a difference in the world

Eggers’ warrant

·  College students need to find more ways to occupy their time, other than playing football and things that won’t help them later in life.

Eggers’ Backing

·  Eggers’ sense of ethos pathos and logos seem to be used efficiently in the essay.

o  His ethos make me believe what he’s saying

v  Not only is he the editor of McSweeney’s, but he is also the founder of 826 Valencia, which is a nonprofit tutoring type center.

v  He uses examples from The Daily California as well as governmental information concerning students to perform 25 hours of community service annually.

o  Eggers’ seems to lack both pathos and logos in the essay.

v  He only uses pathos to try and relate to the reader in some way, he doesn’t put any personal examples that would lead me to believe him.

v  His logic is twisted in some parts. He says that college students should not only go to school full time, while working part time jobs, but they should also have to put in 25 hours of community service.

Rebuttal

·  Eggers’ thinks that college students should have to put in so many hours of community service before graduating. That’s insane, community service projects are a good thing, but they shouldn’t be forced upon someone who has no interest of doing it. Some students also need more time to focus on their studies and family issues. If I was forced to have some kind of community service credit by the time I graduated, I have to admit, I’d be less happy to do, than if I was just to go out and do it on my own. Also, if you’re going to say college students need that requirement, then it should be required for everyone, including students who go to community colleges.

·  He also says that college students pretty much waste their free time. Granted their time could be used more resourcefully, but me being a college student, I’ve learned you need to be able to go out and relive some stress so it’s not all bottled up inside. What is the average amount of free time college students get anyways? Let’s say they get 7 hours of sleep, they have 4 hours of class; making that at least 4 hours of homework, they spend 2 hours eating, and an hour for personal hygiene. That’s 18 hours, leaving 6 hours untouched. Now this could vary depending on the day and the activities he or she is involved in. I hardly see where time is being wasted, except for the hour or two we spend watching TV or some other leisure activity.
