Toronto Drywall Contractor Wins International Recognition for Role in Maple Leaf Gardens Restoration

Capital Drywall Systems’ project selected to represent Canada in Saint-Gobain Gypsum international competition this June in Berlin

(Mississauga, Ont.) – A project by Capital Drywall Systems, Ltd., has been selected as the Canadian winner in the Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy Competition for its exemplary use of CertainTeed Gypsum products in a recent conversion of Toronto’s historic Maple Leaf Gardens. The Toronto contractor is one of only two companies selected to represent North America at the Ninth Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy Awards ceremony this June in Berlin.

“The Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy is a great way to show our appreciation and respect for talented building professional partners who have demonstrated creative and exceptional uses of our gypsum products in recent projects,” says Dave Engelhardt, president of CertainTeed Gypsum. “Capital Drywall Systems stood out to us for its integral role in converting the iconic former home of Toronto Maple Leafs hockey into a vibrant mixed-use sports-retail development. The contractor’s wall and ceiling work on the project helped breathe new life into this historic facility for the enjoyment of Ryerson students, varsity athletes and the local community.”

The Ryerson University Sports & Recreation Centre project involved the adaptive restoration of Maple Leaf Gardens—constructed in 1931 and in continuous use until 1999. The original interior was completely replaced with new floor levels to accommodate Loblaw’s flagship grocery store at street level and Ryerson University’s student athletic center on the second floor, named the Mattamy Athletic Centre. A new ice rink was installed on the top floor, 100 feet above the original arena roof. New interior space created by Capital Drywall Systems combined with extensive restoration work helped maintain a link to the building’s remarkable history. The project utilized a variety of CertainTeed products, including: M2Tech® Type X Moisture & Mould Resistant Gypsum Board; M2Tech Extra Abuse MMR & Abuse Resistant Gypsum Board; and CertainTeed Interior Ceiling Gypsum Board.

“Our experienced team at Capital Drywall accepted the challenge of working on a very special project and we are pleased to partner with CertainTeed and their quality products to contribute to a new, revitalized space that everyone can be proud of,” says Francesco Panaia, vice president & treasurer of Capital Drywall Systems.

Awarded every two years, the Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy recognizes excellence in design, drywall installation and finishing. The competition judges building professionals for their gypsum-related skills in the following categories: Gypsum Board Craftsmanship and Design; Finishing Application; Innovation; Residential; Mixed Use – Commercial (including Hospitality and Retail); and Sector Specific – Hospitals, Hotels and Educational Institutions. This year’s winning projects and a brief video showcasing the event can be viewed at www.saint-gobain-gypsum-international-trophy.com.
