Student Art Show Information

The Socorro Independent School District Student Art Fair is a competitive art show open to all students in grades Kindergarten through 12th. Entrants must be enrolled in a Socorro Independent School during the 2006-2007 school year.

Entries are due at Montwood High School Gym between 3:30 - 6:00 p. m.

All schools will deliver all entries to the large gym at Montwood High School.

Art Teachers and Art Representatives are needed on Friday, April 27, 2007, to set up for Judging. After we accept your art work, please put your art wrok on the proper sign to be set out for judging. We will need help to set out the art work after 6:00 but please help set out any art work but your own and in your own classification.

Judging

Judging will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2007, in the Gym and will start at 9:00 a.m. All art teachers and art representatives need to be present after 10:30. Art work that was not selected for the show will need to be retrieved after judging. At no time are you to interfer with any of the judging. Teachers will be assigned specific categories and specific grade levels to pick up. This will be done the day you deliver your art work. This will help insure that everyone is prepared to pick up their art work immediately after the judging.

Art Fair

When: Saturday, May 5, 2007, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m.

Where: Montwood High School

Awards: Medals/awards may be picked up by parents and students at the award table in the gym.

Art Teachers and Art Representatives should plan to be present on Friday, May 4, 2007 to help set up the show. It takes all day from approximately 8:30 - 3:30. Teachers will need to make their own arrangements for a substitute if one is needed. Art Teachers and Art Representatives also need to plan to be present on the day of the Fair, Saturday May 5, 2007, to help with activities and to retrieve artwork at the conclusion of the show. Each of you will be assigned to work the awards table in different categories for one hour periods.

Art Displays

Winning Student artwork will be on display at the Art Fair. The 1st place (two dimensional) student winners will remain with the district to be displayed for up to one year, unless the student declines to do so.

Group VII 10th-12th


Number of Entries Per Division

Group I-IV: Pre K through 6th grade schools will be allowed three (3) entries per category per division.

Group V: Middle Schools will be allowed up to three (3) entries per category per teacher.

Group VI: High Schools will be allowed up to six (6) entries per category per teacher.

Number of Entries per Student

A student will be limited to two (2) entries.

Categories

Category Medium or Process

Painting All painting media, tempera, acrylics, mixed media, oils, and watercolors.

Drawing All graphic media except printmaking

Design 2-Dimensional arrangement of the elements and principles of design.

Printmaking Relief prints, intaglio, silkscreen, monoprints, etc.

Sculpture All media including ceramics using additive/subtractive process. No dioramas, social studies, or science projects. No soft or oil based clay.

Mixed Media Interrupted plane in two or more media. Must hang on the wall and may be up to 4” in depth. Include paper collage in this category. Do not include works with combinations of drawing or painting media. These should be submitted in either the drawing or painting categories according to the most dominant media.

Crafts Textiles: Batik, weaving, stitchery, macrame, rugs, wall-hanging (mounting optional);

Pottery: Hand formed or wheel thrown ceramic articles; Jewelry: Body ornaments, soft jewelry or enamels.

Computer Graphics Do not use clip art or published images. For all computer works, please identify programs used.

Photography Write this information next to the category. If the work is not printed, you will need to supply a computer and software with the work ready to be viewed.

Preparation of Entries for Competition

1. The campus representative will organize the judging and show at the campus level to determine which work will compete in the district art show. The entries are not to be ranked for the district show.

2. Mat or mount all flat entries, with the exception of textiles. Use white or colored railroad board, mat board, or poster board. Do Not Mat Work On Construction Paper. Pastels must sprayed with fixative. Work that is wet, sticky or glass covered will not be accepted.

3. Please use boxes for three-dimensional entries. Write the name of the school in large letters on the boxes and fill them with shredded paper or other packing materials.

4. All Copyright laws are in effect. Please keep in mind that when you and your student sign the entry blank, you are testifying that the work is original and that in no form is copied from any other sources. The act of Copying the work of another artist in part or in whole and passing it off as one’s own is illegal.

5. Complete entry blanks. Print LEGIBLY or type all the information. Be sure to throw away entry forms left over from previous years and only use the new forms provided. These are on bright yellow paper.

6. Check each entry blank carefully to see if all the information has been provided before attaching it to the item.

7. Securely attach the upper portion of the entry blank to the upper back side of the item so that it goes in the same direction as the work will be viewed.

8. For three-dimensional entries, paste the upper part of the entry black to a piece of light-weight cardboard and tag the entry.

9. Make out two inventory sheets. One inventory sheet will be enclosed with the work and checked when the teacher enters the items. The other sheet will be needed when the entries are retrieved.

10. Pack all entries so that all the entries will be delivered at the same time.

11. Using a black felt-tip marker, place the school coder and the entry number of the entry in the box on both the upper and lower portions of the blank.

Judging

Work will be judged on:

a. Elements and principles of design, composition, form and content.

b. Originality

c. Skillful use of the medium

d. The style of expression may be realistic, abstract or expressive.

Eligible Entries

Each entry must have been created by a student in grades Pre K-12 while attending a school in the El Dorado Independent School District, and must meet the following conditions.

1. Be the work of a single student.

2. Have been completed during the 2006-2007 school year.

3. Have been accomplished under the supervision of the homeroom teacher or the art teacher signing the entry blank. In other words—no art work done outside of the classroom will be accepted

4. Conform to all rules and regulations including matting, size, weight, and preparation.

5. Entry blank must have parent signature.

Ineligible Entries

An entry will be ineligible if it:

1. presents a display problem or falls apart

2. is the work of a student who has moved from the district prior to the exhibition deadline.

3. is an obvious copy, uses dittos, or is in violation of copyright laws.

4. has an improperly completed entry blank.

5. is improperly matted.

6. is a diorama, social studies project, science fair project or has been constructed from oil based soft clay.

7. Correct Form with parent signature is not on art work.

Size and Weight Restrictions

1. Size of flat entries including mat may not exceed 36 inches square.

2. Weight of sculpture and craft entries may not exceed 20 pounds. (No height limit)

3. Very small, delicate, fragile or multi-piece entries, with the exception of jewelry items, should not be entered because they present exhibiting problems.

Awards

The 1st place, two-dimensional art work will remain on display throughout the year. That artwork will be returned to the students in May, 2008. If for any reason any of those winners chose not to have his/her art displayed, they are to contact their art teacher so their artwork can be returned to them.

Certificates: Will be awarded to all participating students.

Art is subject to loss, damage and/or theft. Every precaution will be taken to protect the work. However, we cannot be responsible for art submitted. Please be sure that each entry has a parent signature.

Group Projects

1.  A group project is one that has been completed by two or more individuals.

2.  The project should be presented in a portfolio/photo journal format. This will allow the students to show the development of the project. The winners can be display the journals at the art show.

3.  Another method of presentation is a matted photograph accompanied by a letter. The letter will explain the project, as well where it can be seen in person.

4.  Only two entries per teacher.

5.  Three categories: Middle school, High School, and High school Advanced

6.  Trophies will be awarded to the winning schools. Medals should be awarded to the individual contestants.
