Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the motor trimming industry. Those credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of pleating, piping, quilting, and fluting; demonstrate the operation of pleating; demonstrate the operation of piping; demonstrate the operation of quilting; and demonstrate the operation of fluting.

Range stitching, padding, pattern, materials.

1.7 Purpose of fluting is identified according to material and vehicle manufacturers' specifications and company policy.

Range appearance, comfort, durability.

1.8 Principles of fluting are identified according to material manufacturer's specifications and company policy.

Range stitching, welding, materials, fillers.

1.9 Types of seams are identified according to material and vehicle manufacturers' specifications and company policy.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate the operation of pleating.

2.1 Tools and equipment are identified, and are used according to the tool and equipment manufacturers' specifications.

Range sewing machine, thread, shears, tape, straight edge, square; markers-chalk, chinograph.

2.2 Customer requirements and specifications are identified, and are verified according to company policy.

Range pattern, stitching, padding.

2.3 Materials that enable the pleating to be carried out are identified according to seat and vehicle manufacturers' specification and company policy.

Range backing, materials.

2.4 Pleating is carried out according to specification and company policy.

Range evenly spaced, no missed stitches, correct direction.

2.5 Tools and equipment are clean and put away in their place according to company policy.

2.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.

3.3 Piping is carried out according to specification and company policy.

Range evenly sized, evenly sewn, right length, inconspicuous joins.

3.4 Tools and equipment are clean and put away in their place according to company policy.

3.5 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.

Demonstrate the operation of quilting.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Tools and equipment are identified and used according to the tool and equipment manufacturers' specifications.

Range sewing machine, thread, shears, straight edge, square, tape measure, staple, pliers; markers-chalk, chinograph.

4.2 Materials that enable the quilting to be carried out are identified and used according to material manufacturer's specification and company policy.

Range materials, padding, adhesive.

4.3 Pattern is marked out according to specification, and material is secured to backing according to company policy.

4.4 Material and backing are sewn together according to specification and company policy.

Range no missed stitching, pattern even and neat; allowance of +/- 2mm.

4.5 Tools and equipment are clean and put away in their place according to company policy.

4.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.

Outcome 5

Demonstrate the operation of fluting.

5.1 Tools and equipment are identified, and are used according to the tool and equipment manufacturers' specifications.

5.2 Materials that enable the fluting to be carried out are identified according to the material and vehicle manufacturers' specification and company policy.

Range backing, padding, cover.

5.3 Materials are marked out according to specification and company policy, and match existing job.

5.4 Fluting is carried out according to specification and company policy.

Range evenly spaced, balanced appearance, no missed stitches, correct direction; sewn, folded and stuffed.

5.5 Tools and equipment are clean and put away in their place according to company policy.

5.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.
