Setting the scene (5 mins)
Share the learning objective with the class.
Explain to the children that we are now going to use 2Go to learn about the repeat function.
Main Input (5 Mins)
Prepare the computer to show a white backround with a grid on top. Switch on the ‘programming’ functions via the Teacher Options (Ctrl+Shift+O) and the screen should look similar to the oone shown below.
Demonstrate how you can draw a shape and then use the repeat function at the right to repeat the shape up to 8 times (x8). Now ask the children to draw a square of any size and use the repeat function to draw it 5 times.
Activity short focused task (10 mins)
This activity works best in twos where one child will be the observer and then they swap. Each child should have experience of creating a shape and using the repeat to automatically draw that shape again.
The aim here is to focus on the use the repeat function. The programming functions are slightly different here as the children do not need to add an extra turn – do not worry about this as the practical use of the Pixie at the end of this lesson will reinforce the use of the turn.
Can you repeat that please? (Cont) / Making things happen / Year 2Review and recall (10 mins)
Bring the class together and review the learning objective. Ask the children how the computer remembered the shape.
Bring out the Pixie again to reinforce how we can symbolized the repeat function here with the Pixie by pressing Go again as the Pixie has stored all the commands in its memory.
Key questions to ask and to display:
What is the repeat function useful for?
How can we repeat a shape using the Pixie?
Vocabulary:
Forward
Backwards
Right Turn
Left Turn
Teaching Points:
Work with any additional adults that you may have available for this task and ensure that they are happy how they need to support the children. It is useful to set up Pixie minders to ensure that they are switched off and set up for charging at the end of each session.
Assessment Opportunities:
Children here will have to work co-operatively in this group task. Ensure that all names are recorded on the Pixie record and where possible make observation notes for assessment purposes.
