Nose-stalgia: Explore the power of scent!

When you smell fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, what does the aroma make you think of? Does the scent of play-doh or crayons conjure up long forgotten kindergarten memories? It’s common for people to associate certain smells with past experiences or emotions. Explore this connection for yourself.

Things you will need

-access to 5 “nose-stalgia” cans

-data sheet for recording observations

Be sure to read all the steps below before you begin the activity.

1. Obtain a “nose-stalgia can” containing a mystery scent. Record the number on the can.

2. Remove the lid from the can and hold the open can a short distance from your nose. Use your free hand to move the scents released from the can toward your nose. Inhale the scent. If the scent is weak, move the can closer to your nose and try again.

3. Does the scent make you think of a particular person, place or situation? Does it evoke any particular feelings or bring to mind any particular memory? Record your observation. If necessary, inhale more of the scent.

4. Describe the scent that you’re exploring. What three objectives come to mind to describe it? Is it sweet, sour, strong, flowery, spicy, or earthy? Compare the scent to others you know.

5. Do you recognize the scent? If so, try to name it. If you aren’t sure, take a guess or give more than one possibility.

6. Repeat the process with the remaining cans. The true names of the scents will be revealed to you when you are done making your observations.
