PARAGRAPH WRITING

Paragraphs are a form of written communication which contains a minimum of eight to ten sentences. Each sentence in a paragraph talks about or develops one single main idea. A paragraph develops one idea with a series of logically connected sentences.

The four elements essential to good paragraph writing are: Unity, Order, Coherence, and Completeness.

PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE

A good paragraph will have a structure which includes an interesting beginning called the Topic sentence or Introduction, a middle portion with specific details called the Supporting details or body and a satisfying ending called the Closing sentence or conclusion.

(a)Topic sentence or Introduction–The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph.
What does it do?
It introduces the main idea of the paragraph.

How do I write them?

Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Make clear what your paragraph will be about.

(b)Supporting details or Body– They come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph.
What does it do?

They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph.
How do I write them?

You should give supporting facts, details, and examples.

(c)Closing sentence or Conclusion–The closing sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph.
What does it do?

It restates the main idea of your paragraph.

How do I write them?

Restate the main idea of the paragraph using different words.

Sample paragraph:Topic sentence or Introduction

Trees are our life line.We cannot live anywhere on the earth without trees. Mainly we get food from plant kingdom as well as household furniture, medicines, herbs, and even oxygen. Trees are not only useful for mankind but also useful for animals. They absorb carbon dioxide from environment and gives fresh oxygen. They helps to make our environment pollution free. Trees prevent soil erosion, drought, and floods. Man has cut down trees in large numbers and he is cutting more and more trees.Man must stop cutting more trees, otherwise he will suffer greatly.

Supporting details or BodyClosing sentence or Conclusion
