The Rev. Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway, Sr. was called to Union Baptist Church as Assistant Pastor in 2004 and elected to the position of Senior Pastor of this historic Servant Church in 2007. He succeeds the legendary Rev. Dr. Vernon N. Dobson. Rev. Hathaway has the distinction of being the 10th Pastor in the church’s history.
A native Baltimorean and son of Union Baptist Church, he is truly a man of God; acknowledging his call to ministry and through obedience to Christ, he prepared himself academically and spiritually for the shepherding of God’s people. Reverend Hathaway has two earned terminal degrees: Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from The North Carolina College of Theology and Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary. He earned his Masters of Arts in Church Ministries and a Certificate in Urban Ministry from Saint Mary’s Seminary and University. He is a graduate of The Harvard Divinity School’s Summer Leadership Institute. He earned a Certificate in Textual Exegesis, Hermeneutics, and Homiletics from Georgetown College and Regent’s Park College, Oxford University. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from The McKendree School of Religion.
He also studied Philosophical Theology at what was then Coppin State College and was the first President of its Philosophical Theology Club. He is the recipient of the following fellowships: National Civic League, 2001 Pfrozheimer Fellow and Maryland Historical Society, 2005 Lord Baltimore Fellow. Rev. Hathaway is a graduate of Baltimore City College High School. He is a member of Homiletics and the Society of Biblical Literature.
Dr. Hathaway is a member of the following Boards of Directors: Maryland General Hospital, Urban Associates New Market Tax Credits, Harbor Back Shares New Market Tax Credits, Greenline Ventures New Market Tax Credits, Safe and Sound, Druid Mondawmin Healthy Families, and the Advisory Board of Coppin State University School of Nursing. He is President/CEO of Union Baptist Church ~ School, Inc.
He is a contributing author of numerous mental health publications and books.
Reverend Hathaway’s wife, Kathleen Brice, is a career employee of the Department of Defense. They are parents to two children, Alvin, Jr. J.D, M.B.A. and Adaria, enrolled in the Ed.D. Urban Educational Leadership Program at Morgan State University.
