A Topic: School Closures and Reuse – What Districts Need to do Before Closing or Reopening Schools Wentworth

Schools are an integral part of a community. Schools no longer serve as only educational facilities. Many are used for places of worship, meeting halls, and sports events. So, when a district decides to close a school, the community may be affected. Understanding the steps a district takes to close or repurpose a school will affect the decisions on how a facility must be maintained in the future. In addition, a school which has been closed for an extended period of time and now needs to be reopened requires special considerations to ensure staff and students reoccupying a facility are in a safe and healthful learning environment. This presentation focuses on choices districts need to take into consideration prior to either closing or reopening schools.
