Personal Memory Journal – World History and Geography Project – Brey

During this class you will write a brief memoir – a Personal Memory Journal. It will consist of your thoughts from and memories of your life. It is designed to be completed by the end of the year prior to exams (exact date to be announced as the year progresses), but you must begin now and work on it for the remainder of this term in order to complete it on time without rushing. The goal is that you will be able to record interesting events of your life so that your personal history will live long after you have stopped.

You will write an introduction describing you and your family history. You will conclude the journal with an epilogue – a short entry that predicts what will happen in your future – basically explaining where you see yourself going in life. The topics you include in your journal will follow the alphabet, A through Z. Therefore, you will have 28 entries total (26 letters, an introduction and an epilogue). Throughout your entries, you will be as descriptive as possible and include as many names and places as you can remember. Examples will be discussed in future classes. Feel free to take time to outline each “chapter” (letter of the alphabet) so that your entries are sensible.

I will collect your notebook at random times during class. Periodically, I will look at your progress and assess a grade based on the quality and completeness of your work. The periodic checks will be counted towards your participation grade.

Due Dates (tentative): Oct 30th - Seven entries (25% of the project) completed the end of first marking period.

January 13th - Fourteen entries (50% of the project) completed by the end of first semester.

March 19th - Twenty-one entries (75% of the project) completed by the end of third marking period.

May 26st - All 28 entries (100% of the project) due by the end of the year.

At times during the year, we may dedicate additional class time beyond the first 5-10 minutes of class to allow you the opportunity to organize and develop your personal history. This project is intended to be completed in class with minimal outside time needed if you consistently work during the time set aside in class.

If your Personal Memory Journal is complete and shows some creativity, thought and historical accuracy, your project grade will be no less than a B- (or 80%). The more thorough and the more creative you are in describing your life, the higher the grade final grade. If you desire, after writing all 28 entries you may decorate your journal and pages and sections with drawings, pictures, photographs, material cut out of magazines or newspapers or brochures, etc. Anything beyond the required 28 written entries may result in a higher grade. Any journal that does not contain all letters of the alphabet will receive a lower grade, regardless of how “pretty” it is. Any journal that is grossly incomplete or a bunch of "junk" will receive a zero.
