Criteria / Yes/No / Target for Improvement
The introduction answers the question clearly, makes a reference to context, and states the signposts.
The essay is structured using the SIX paragraph plan, with four main thematic paragraphs linking to the main question.
Each paragraph begins with a clear topic sentence that is closely related to the main question.
Sentences are clear and fluent and grammar, punctuation and spelling are sound.
The points in each paragraph are well organised, properly explained and developed, and supported with appropriate quotations and examples.
Quotes are embedded within the middle or at the end of sentences, and follow the pattern ‘little and often’.
Appropriate and convincing references to context are made throughout the essay, and are included in each paragraph. These are linked to your own points, and arise from them, rather than sounding that ‘bolted on’ sections.
The conclusion raises new points and new material, rather than being simply summative. It links back to the main question and provides a personal response to it.
