Change

As each day, month and year creeps past us [1], things change. Things we did when we were only taking our first steps into primary have changed. People that we know, things we used to do, the fun that we had, it has all changed. To clarify, when I mean change, I don’t mean a mere hairstyle or a change in how McDonalds makes their toys; I mean the way society has changed. When I was growing up in school, things were very different from the way they are now. Even though it has been only ten years, I find the teachers are softer on the kids (in terms of discipline), their teaching methods very different and biased towards those who are having difficulties rather than the “get it or don’t” method. Secondly, the language has changed. Back in the days when I was in primary the word “suck” was considered to be rude and offensive; you could even get in trouble for saying it! Then the word became very loose and everybody started using it. The same went for the word “hell”. I avoided using the word up until grade 8 because we considered it so bad. Now, every word in the book is being used by people in my school and, what I find the most disturbing, in the elementary school as well. In fact, just the other day, I saw an elementary student writing the F-bomb on the school bus window. Fortunately for me, I have resisted the temptation to use anything “worse” than the word damn. It was like all that time that we had endured getting in trouble for saying “suck” was all given up on[2]. Fashion these days has also changed especially, I find, in the female group. I guarantee you that if walked down any hall in any high school, middle school (maybe even an elementary school) with your grandmother, she would be horrified at what some of the people wear these days. With the short skirts, skin tight jeans [3] and 5 pounds of make-up on some people’s faces, things have definitely changed.

[1] Personification- The attribute is to the days, months and years with the verb creeping. The days, months and years can not creep past us like a human can, meaning it is personified.

[2] Simile- Using the word “like” to compare the years we spent getting in trouble as a waste of time.

[3] Alliteration- The repetition of the consonant “s” to create a fun conclusion to the end of a long line of thoughts.
