SHARE Spelling Bee Announcement

When: December 13, 2008

8:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. Check-in. 8:20 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Opening prayer and review of rules. 8:30 a.m. to ? Spelling Bee.

Please be available for the entire day. If there are 40 or more students registered by October 15, there will be a morning session for grades 1-4 and an afternoon session for grades 5-8, with one-half hour for lunch in between. Award ceremonies will be held at the end of each session (as necessary). We will inform all participants of the final schedule after registration has closed. Registration forms and fees must be postmarked by October 15, 2008. Any forms after this date will be returned to sender. Please be mindful of home educated friends who may not have access to the internet, and consider printing a copy of this announcement for them!

Who: All home school students grades 1-8

Why: Spelling bees are beneficial to students in many ways. Preparation for the spelling bee teaches students how to establish and achieve the goals of increasing vocabulary through memorization and word usage, and demonstrating this knowledge in a public setting. Other benefits include building confidence through public speaking experience, developing good sportsmanship in a competitive environment and demonstrating the academic excellence of home school education. Home school students should be encouraged to seek out a challenging opportunity like a spelling bee as part of their education. NOTE: The highest placing student from each eligible county will have the opportunity to participate in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee. Those counties are dictated to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch by Scripps National Bee. They are: Missouri—Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Warren, and Washington.

Illinois—Clinton, Franklin, Jersey, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair.

Registration: Begins September 18, 2008. Ends October 15, 2008.

Cost is $5.00/student.

Please add $3.00 per student if spelling list and rules must be sent via U.S.

Postal Service instead of through e-mail. Participant and placement ribbons will not be mailed.
