Disability Advisory Council Meeting

Minutes – February 7, 2017

Present: Blank, Horn, Immel, Reimer, Siewert, Wayda, Williams, Acker, Dollard, Hasler, LeBow

Meeting called to order at 3:00 pm.

  • Climate SubcommitteeReport - (Susan LeBow/Olivia Riemer) Susanreported that the Coffee & Culture program was well attended (200 people) and students were very interested in the topic. Olivia reported the other events were well attended as well
  • Members were asked to begin to think of ideas for next fall.
  • We need additional help on this sub-committee. Carol Grasamkee has volunteered. We will need additional support.
  • Accessibility Assessment Subcommittee Report – No Report
  • Old Business – no report
  • New Business–
  • Paul Hasler sent around pictures of the new crosswalk on Maria. The LED, solar-powered signage is working well! Stripes will be painted on the street this Spring by the City.
  • Snow/Ice Removal – Paul mentioned that the north end crew is doing a good job removing snow. He mentioned that people may not know that they can meet specific accommodations for ensuring that the wayfinding for persons needing assistance in the winter-time. They currently work with two faculty members about clearing parking spots and entryways to buildings.
  • NFAC Elevator Signage – George Acker shared signs that will be ordered yet this semester to better identify the NFAC elevator. Paul Hasler will work with George to identify funding.
  • Residence Hall Saf-Lok questions – Olivia Reimer mentioned that the current SAF-LOC system can/could be challenging for persons with visual challenges or people with mobility issues. The council discussed several possible modifications. Susan will forward this question to Cindy V. for further discussion.
  • The committee reviewed the terms of serving on the council. Jo Ellen will be leaving at the end of the semester and we will also need to fill Roxanne’s spot. Please be thinking of who we can invite.
  • Susan indicated that she will be stepping down as a chairperson at the end of the semester. Please consider this as a University service opportunity!
  • The committee discussed and forwarded their suggestion to change the name of the council from Disability Advisory Council to Differing Abilities Advisory Council. Susan will forward the request to the Chancellor’s Office.
