ZOO PHOTO CLUB MINUTES
March 16, 2009
We had three guests at the meeting. Erin Benner and Mark Leaver were two of them and I did not get the name or email address of the third. Erin said she found information about the club in her visit to the Zoo earlier in the day. Mark said he found us on the Website. We went around the room and everyone told what kind of equipment they use and what they like to shoot.
Dan brought up the subject of the note cards we are going to have made for the gift shop to sell. He suggest sets of 10 cards, each taken by a different photographer. We should bring in our five best photos in a 4”X6” (card size) sample. The format can be vertical or horizontal. On the back there will be information on the name of the animal, the name of the photographer and the Zoo Photo Club. If this run is successful we can do a second run with ten additional pictures. Everyone needs to get out to the Zoo and get some new pictures.
There are members who do not have badges. We will update the badges and make new ones.
Jenna, our liaison was present. She said on April 18th they will put a Wildlife Photo Gallery in the Lobby and they need images for that. They should be no larger than 11 X 14. You need to tell someone by April 1st what you are bringing and what size.
Jenna passed cards that are discounts for joining Friends of the Zoo.
Tropics will open on May 1st. The Sneak Peak will be on April 11th. From 9:30 until Noon. Then the Kid’s fun fest will be from 10AM until 3PM.
On Saturday, August 8th Rick Salmon will be in Blue Springs doing a photo seminar. It is $40.00 if you sign up by July 1st. It will last 6 hours and is sponsored by Image Makers Photo Club of Blue Springs.
Marie has a docent friend who wants a picture of Rufus, the male orangutan for a friend whose name is Rufus.
The Docents are working on the history of the 100 year old Kansas City Zoo. They may need photos for that. They don’t have to be from this Zoo. They will put the history on the front windows by the Bistro. The pictures need to be at the printers by April 1st.
Last meeting was spent taking photos of skulls and castings here in the conference room.
Jon Chester will be having classes at the Zoo on the 17th and the 23rd of May. It will cost $100.00 and will begin at 7:30 in the morning.
There are new viewing decks for the plains animals and the lions. Jenna is working on a walk-through for us.
2009 is the Year of the Primate.
Chad Davis had great images of Yellowstone and the Grand Teton National Parks.
After a short break for refreshments, Carla gave a program on “Shoot More and Process Less”. In the current Outdoor Photographer she and Dan Paulsen had seen an article about the subject. She thinks we are getting away from taking good pictures with the camera. We are depending too much on software to fix mistakes that could be taken care of with a little more careful shooting.
