TRiO UPWARD BOUND ACADEMIC ADVISOR

Full-time, 11-month per year, grant-funded, exempt position
SALARY: $35,516 for a full-time, 11-month renewable contract (pro-rated for first year). Position dependent upon grant funding.

START DATE: September 1, 2014. The position is funded by a Department of Education TRiO
Grant through the 2012-2017 grant cycle. The current grant is funded through
May 31, 2017.
WORK SCHEDULE: 11-month contract (during the June 1, 2015-May 31, 2016 contract year,
December is the non-scheduled month). Work schedule will include Monday
through Friday weekly plus one Saturday every month during the academic
year (September-May); Also requires extensive weekend and evening work
during the six-week summer academy.

Big Bend Community College is a rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves approximately 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site and online instruction.

The TRiO Upward Bound program is a federally funded grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $469,765 which covers 100% of the program costs. This year-round program provides academic support, college preparation, career awareness, and other support services to low-income and potential first-generation college students. It is designed to help students become more successful in high school and prepare to enter and successfully complete postsecondary education. The program works with the following five target high schools within Central Washington: Moses Lake, Warden, Othello, Royal, and Lake Roosevelt High School in Coulee Dam.

For six weeks, TRiO Upward Bound operates an intensive residential summer academy for approximately 56 students on the BBCC campus. Students participate in high school or college classes and tutorial sessions during the day, including organized recreation and enrichment activities in the evening. The program also offers day trips, tours, and weekend field trips designed to promote personal and social growth.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the TRiO Upward Bound Director, the Academic Advisor will provide academic and personal advising to participants throughout the year to ensure successful completion of high school and subsequent enrollment in a program at the post-secondary level.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary essential duties and responsibilitiesinclude but will not be limited to the following:

  • Travel to select target high schools on a weekly basis
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of part-time staff including academic coaches and summer academy residence hall staff
  • Assess participants’ academic, motivational, and personal needs
  • Provide approximately one-third of participants with academic, career, and personal advising
  • Administer interactive internet based instructional program to sophomore level students
  • Assist participants and parents with scholarship, financial aid and college applications
  • Assist in the planning, delivery, and supervision of academic year and summer academy services tailored to the specific needs of the program participants
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and leading of monthly Saturday PREP educational, cultural, and social activities
  • Assist in the supervision of academic coaches and residential summer academy staff
  • Assist in the planning of quarterly academic coach meetings
  • Communicate regularly with TRiO Upward Bound staff concerning participants’ progress through participation in weekly staff meetings
  • Maintain accurate participant records including documentation of eligibility, participant academic records, contacts, and exit information
  • Communicate and maintain positive rapport with participants, parents, target high school principals, counselors, college admission personnel and other community groups
  • Assist summer academy trainer/instructor in service learning and advanced college & career planning courses
  • Maintain confidentiality and make appropriate referrals to community agencies
  • Assist in the evaluation of program services and the preparation of federal grant reports

OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Follows safe work practices and policies, including, but not limited to security and safety, fire, disaster, and safe lifting.
  • Ensures self-compliance with college policies and procedures as well as state and federal requirements.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the college’s values.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the college.
  • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience working with low income and/or academically disadvantaged students.
  • Ability to establish a trusting relationship with disadvantaged high school students.
  • Ability to work a minimum of one (1) Saturday per month and some evenings during the academic year and irregular days/hours during the six-week residential summer academy.
  • Provide proof of a valid Washington State driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer proficient in Microsoft office programs such as word, power point, publisher, outlook, etc.
  • Previous experience working in a multicultural environment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work experience with Hispanic and/or Native American students.
  • Applicants with similar backgrounds to target population and/or previous experience working with TRIO programs are encouraged to apply.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency.
  • Demonstrated bicultural experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Perform moderate physical effort, lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability/endurance to stand/walk for prolonged, extensive or considerable time.
  • Occasional reaching/stooping/bending/kneeling/crouching.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings, in order to complete tasks on deadline.
  • Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with faculty, staff, professionals, students, and the public.
