The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria is currently looking for new partners for student and teacher exchange mainly regarding Nursing, Catering and Health Equipment Technology but we will accept contacts regarding any other field of study taught by us (see below).
The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria is one of the country’s first polytechnic institutions, founded in 1980. It was first established with the School of Education, and currently comprehends five schools, distributed throughout several towns of the Leiria district. During these years, the number of students and teachers at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria has grown considerably. The institution currently has about 600 teachers and 10,000 students and modern facilities and equipment.
The main schools are briefly described as follows:
School of Education (Leiria)
The School of Education (Leiria) was created in 1979, being integrated in the IPL in 1980. The School of Education started its activities providing training for teaching careers, recently it has broadened its educational offer so as to provide training in Tourism, Social Work and Media Education among others, in order to match the labour market’s needs.
School of Technology and Management (Leiria)
The School of Technology and Management started its activity in the academic year 1989/1990 and offers good conditions for the theoretical education, as well as the practical component of each degree programme, being the largest higher education school in the Leiria district. As a clear response to the needs of the Region’s labour market, the School provides education in the areas of Engineering, Management, Accountancy and Finance, Health Equipment Technologies, Public Administration, Paralegal Studies ,Marketing, Civil Protection among others.
School of Fine Arts and Design (Caldas da Rainha)
It begun its school activity in 1990, being strongly identified and suited to the city it is located. The school is a reference in the national Higher Education panorama, being already at the level of the best European institution in the same knowledge area. Besides the degrees in Design and Fine Arts, this School took a step forward by offering new degrees in: Sound and Image, Theatre and Cultural Animation.
School of Maritime Technology (Peniche)
This School was established in 1999/2000 having the sea as its trademark and the basis of its identity. Located in Peniche, the educational offer is totally adjusted to the Bologna Process: Biotechnology and Maritime Biology, Food and Biological Engineering, Tourism and Hotel Management, Tourism, Marketing for Tourism, Catering and Civil Protection. The new degree in Catering is meant to reinforce the School educational offer in the Tourism and Hotel area.
School of Health Sciences (Leiria)
The School was integrated in the IPL in 2001, having known a strong boast. It offers education in the nursing area, being one of the most prestigious schools of the country in this field. In 2005 the NursingSchool, became the School of Health Sciences. Behind the name change, this is a step forward to carry out an educational project extension in higher education, offering more degrees than the Nursing Degree.
We have already all degrees adapted to the Bologna process and offer Intensive Portuguese Language Courses during all academic year. Furthermore, we receive students from all over Europe and overseas and have a huge experience in internationalization.
