Context and Environment / INDIA - India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world.
India is often referred and labeled as amalgamation of different cultures, religions, caste system, dance ,music, architecture and food, its full of diversities and India is united as Indians.
Among the total population, 2.1% are disabled and the percentage of Mentally Challenged in India is 0.2% and there are many government and non government organizations working for the welfare of disabled all over India and lot of measures have been taken to create awareness on the prevention of disability.
PUDUCHERRY - Puducherry formerly known as Pondicherry is a union Territory of India, the Tamil name is Puducherry which means New Town.
It consists of four small unconnected districts Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam and the overall population is 12,44,464 and the total land area is 492 kmsq with an literacy rate of 86.55%
Commonly spoken languages are French, Tamil, Malayalam and Urudhu.
As per the recent census the total population of Disabled is 25857and there are many Special Schools and Child Care Institutes working for the welfare of Disabled in Puducherry.
Role of Baby Sarah’s Home in Pondicherry:
Baby Sarah’s Home as a unit of Integrated Rehabilitation & Development Center (IRDC) is a registered organization started in the year 1992 and working for the welfare of Mentally Challenged and Orphan Children for the past 20 years.
And the service of BSH is very much appreciated by the State & the Central Government by various awards and appreciations and its still continuing its service for the empowerment of Disabled in Puducherry.
And BSH is considered as Knowledge Hub for those who want to gain knowledge and experience in the field of Disability.
Helping Mentally Challenged Children:
Volunteers will be placed Baby Sarah’s Special School. Baby Sarah’s Home is a Unit of Integrated Rehabilitation & Development Centre (IRDC), residential special school and rehabilitation center. BSH is the only center for Orphaned mentally retarded children in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
BSH provides care, education and Vocational Training to around 50 Mentally Challenged Children.
The children are being educated in Social and basic life skills. The mild and moderate mentally challenged children are provided with skill development training in arts and crafts. They take part in the drawing competitions, they even represented in the Union Territory in the Special Olympics for the disabled. These children are being taught by special educators: specially trained teachers.
Play materials, teaching and learning materials are provided to them to enhance their learning ability. These children need teachers who can teach tem the basic daily activities skills through play and participation.
Volunteers will be involved in the Special School where they will be assisting our special Educators, social Workers, speech Therapist, Physiotherapist and Vocational Instructor to enable each and every Disabled to learn the activities of daily living and also in Play activities and Gardening.
Volunteers can also share their creative and innovative ideas which can contribute to the welfare of our Disabled children.
Volunteers are expected to take part in special events, occasions and programmes which will be conducted often at BSH on various topics.
Volunteers have to assist the teachers during the play activities, gardening and in imparting Activities of Daily Living Skills in the Baby Sarah’s Special School.
And to conduct sports activities and events to promote the skills of children with special needs.
Gardening is used as Mud Therapy at Baby Sarah’s Home and to develop their motor skills, so volunteers are expected to assist in these activities.
Volunteers are expected to build and maintain a healthy rapport with all our children, teachers and management.
At the end of the volunteering service, certificate will be issued at the farewell party for our volunteers and BSH will always try to win win situation (both BSH and Volunteers should be benefited).
TASKS FOR VOLUNTEERS:
1.Assisting the teachers in their daily work
2.Helping the children with their class work
3.Conducting sports events and activities to promote the life skills in children with special needs.
4.Training for the teachers in new methods or approach
5.Gardening (it is used as Mud Therapy and to promote the motor skills in children with special needs).

Airport(s) / Volunteers can fly to/fromChennai Airport
Accommodation / Volunteers will share a single or double room in a flat or in any guest house in Auroville or near to the city with all furniture, kitchen facility and bathroom.
Food / A monthly allocation (60 euros) will be provided for food.
Lunch will be provided at Baby Sarah’s Home.
Local Transport / Rented bikes will be provided.
For long journeys, taxi or buses will be used.

Visa Information / For volunteering more than a period of 6 months, Employment Visa or X entry visa can be obtained and after the arrival in India, volunteer has to be registered (within 14 days) in the Embassy through Foreigners Regional Registration office.
