Adding a Data & Targeting module to our Customer Guides

Last year, we redesigned our Customer Guides making them easier to use and understand. The content, presented in modules, provides the steps required when preparing your mailing. These modules are: Service Overview, Pricing, Designing, Preparing, Creating an Order, Depositing and Paying & Terms.

Canada Post can help you use data to maximize the impact of your message through data analysis, list hygiene and more. When a list is used wisely, businesses can target top customers, get their brand directly into the right hands and boost profits in a cost-effective way.

In January, a new Data & Targeting module will be added to the Neighbourhood Mail and Personalized Mail Customer Guides. This module will provide a comprehensive view of CanadaPost’s Data & Targeting solutions to complement your Smartmail Marketing™ campaigns.

Advance posting of these Customer Guides will be available at canadapost.ca/notice on November 18, 2016.

Increasing dimensions of Personalized Mail Special Handling

To better meet the needs of our customers who wish to have greater creative flexibility by mailing bigger and bulkier items, we will be increasing the maximum width for Oversize (flexible) and increasing the maximum length for Oversize (rigid) and Dimensional items in January 2017.

To ensure effective delivery, items that are rigid have different requirements than flexible items. The new minimum and maximum sizes will be as follows:

SPECIAL HANDLING / FROM / TO
Oversize (flexible) / 380 mm x 270 mm x 35 mm / 380 mm x 380 mm x 35 mm
Oversize (rigid) / 300 mm x 130 mm x 35 mm / 380 mm x 130 mm x 35 mm
Dimensional / 300 mm x 130 mm x 55 mm / 380 mm x 130 mm x 55 mm
Updating containers and shipping labels for Machineable Mail

We have simplified our container and shipping label requirements for Machineable Mail. The current requirement to include the destination plant where the mailing will be deposited will be removed from the container and shipping labels. This change does not apply to Special Handling or Delivery Facility Presort mailings.

Changes and enhancements introduced in 2016

Launched the new Personalized Mail 2D barcoded Postal Indicia

A new Personalized Mail 2D static barcode postal indicia was introduced to help improve the processing of your mail items in our network. The 2D postal indicia is used to locate the address block, detect misfaced items, identify the service name for reporting and provide for future barcode capabilities.

The new indicia will be mandatory as of March 31, 2017.

To improve the customer experience, we have simplified our processes by:

  • eliminating the mandatory pre-approval process that applied to customized indicia
  • re-designing the indicia webpage, making it easier to select the correct indicia template

Postal indicia artwork can be found at canadapost.ca/indicia.

Added flexibility to Machineable Mail for creative items

Machineable Mail specifications for Standard and Oversize items have been expanded to provide you with more creative flexibility when using Machineable Mail. The following creative features are now acceptable if pre-tested and approved prior to deposit:

  • alternative tab/sealing locations
  • zipper seals/perforations on the exterior items
  • non-paper enclosures within a self-mailer
  • tip-on placed on a card
  • square self-mailers
  • die-cuts placed along the top, leading or trailing edge

See Machineable Mail in the Designing module at canadapost.ca/postalservices for more details on how to have your items pre-tested.

Introduced Machineable Mail How to videos

To help better explain our Machineable Mail requirements, we are developing a series of videos which will be posted to our video library. These videos will help you visualize how these items are processed in our equipment and highlight key specifications to ensure you benefit from our Machineable prices.

The first in our series of videos, Getting Started with Machineable Mail and Designing Envelopes for Machineable Mail can be found at canadapost.ca/howtovideos. Look for additional videos that will be posted over the coming months:

  • Creating cards
  • Producing self-mailers
  • Machine readability requirements

We hope these new videos will help you discover the benefits of Machineable Mail.

Introduced Predictive Eye Tracking service

Canada Post is pleased to offer a Predictive Eye Tracking (PET) service to help ensure your direct mail and other advertising pieces are optimized to capture your customer’s attention and emphasize your key messages. This technology enables you to predict how effective a marketing piece is likely to be before you send it, providing a chance to make improvements that will resonate best with your customers and maximize your return on investment.

Predictive Eye Tracking assesses three key elements of a communication piece:

  • Visual path: Measures the amount of attention to a particular feature to predict whether a consumer will notice it within the first three to five seconds.
  • Complexity: Analyzes the amount of content and clutter in an image.
  • Focus: Uses a heat map to display the areas in an image that draw visual attention. This helps identify whether someone’s attention will be focused on key messages.

The PET analysis report on these key areas helps businesses understand whether the key messages in their direct mailand other communication pieces are noticeable to their target customer.

For further information visit canadapost.ca/predictiveeyetracking or contact your Canada Post Sales or Service representative.

Introducing a new Postal Code Targeting service

In early 2017, we will be launching a new service called Postal Code Targeting. We have been testing this service with our commercial customers for the past year and will soon be ready to bring it to market.

This service supports the acquisition of new customers for your business by targeting postal codes that meet the geographic and demographic profile of your ideal customers. With this service, you can also remove your current customers from your campaign, thus maximizing your return on investment with cost-effective and highly targeted campaigns.

Look for more information in early 2017!

Improving our commercial invoice

In 2017, Canada Post will be improving the commercial invoices to make them easier to read, easier to understand and easier to process, while providing you the information you need to support your business. You will have options to choose the right format for your business and new online support to assist you with your choices!

Expect more information on these exciting changes in early 2017.

Important reminders

Removal of Lettermail Presort category

In January 2017, Lettermail Presort will be discontinued. This will impact both Standard and Oversize mail categories. Lettermail Presort items already meet Machineable Mail requirements, and deposit locations accepting Lettermail Presort will also accept Machineable Lettermail.

Lettermail Presort volumes have declined significantly over the past several years as customers have shifted from Lettermail Presort to Machineable Lettermail to take advantage of the fewer mail preparation requirements (no container labeling, sorting or edgemarking needed). In January 2016, we aligned the pricing of Lettermail Presort to Machineable Lettermail.
