How to Access On-line G.I.S. Data

Geospatial Data Gateway

The Gateway was developed through a cooperative effort of three USDA agencies: Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Services Agency (FSA), and Rural Development (RD). Since each agency has a presence in county field offices and share many GIS data layers, the gateway provides data in a consistent format across the country.

The site provides many data layers that can be downloaded in various formats. It is important to understand this site is designed to provide data only. It does not provide viewing software! You will need to have GIS software installed on your computer to view and analyze the data.

To Use the Data Gateway:

Using Internet Explorer, go to http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/

Click on The Gateway

Click Quick County

Type in the County you want, then select the State

When ready, click the Continue button.

When this window appears, put a check mark in front of the items you want:

When done, click Continue to Step 3 at the bottom of the screen.

A window like this will appear. Select the projections for your data (i.e. the data will be in UTM projection, Zone 13, NAD83).

Continue to Step 4

Make sure your name and delivery information is typed in - select Download and put a checkmark by Save Values and click Continue to Step 5.

Review your order. Click Place Order, if correct.

You will receive an email message when it is ready to download.

When you get an email message from The Gateway, click on the path and download it.
