The Idaho Panhandle National Forest – St. Joe Ranger District will soon begin filling multiple temporary seasonal positions for the 2016 Season. Openings are available at various grade levels within the Recreation Program. These are SEASONAL TEMPORARY positions with a maximum six month tour schedule (NTE 1039 hrs). The anticipated start date for these positions is mid-May to early June, 2016. Employees who are students generally work through the end of August, while others may work as late as October.

Trails Positions:

Duties – These positions will be part of the district trail crew. Employees will perform trail maintenance on foot, horseback or motorcycle. Experience working with horses and mules, steep trails, and previous packing experience desired for backcountry positions. Motorized crews require expert motorized trail bike riding abilities as the terrain is very rugged. These positions will require strenuous field work in difficult terrain and inclement weather. Field packs weighing up to 45 pounds will not be uncommon. Environmental working conditions vary widely, ranging from cool and wet during early spring and summer to hot and dry mid to late summer. Applicants should be physically prepared and have the appropriate clothing and gear to work in these environments. Crews may be required to camp for up to 8 days at a time in the backcountry as well as use of a chainsaw.

Engineering Technician Position:

Duties - This position will be part of the St Joe District’s Engineering Program on the St Joe Ranger District. The employee will perform engineering and cost share program support by: Installing, maintaining and removal of traffic counters for vehicle traffic and use recording. Inventorying road barriers and accessories and recording conditions. Installing and maintaining road related signs including, but not limited to, mile markers, route markers and directional signs. Maintenance of road gates, painting and installing object markers and restriction signs. Duties will also include other similar duties supporting the engineering program, as assigned. Working conditions vary to due to the majority of the work being in the field. This may include lifting heavy equipment, driving on low volume rugged roads and the use of a chainsaw.

Archaeological Technician Positions:

Duties - Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Researchers reference materials such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas. Performs on-the-ground area searches for surface and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archeological remains. Identifies and records historic and prehistoric cultural resource sites. Performs a variety of computations and assessments of standard archeological data, such as entering archeological artifact and projects data in appropriate forms and databases. Produces site and survey maps. Reviews work in progress to see that standards for prefield research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met. Advises other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory and provides written instructions, research materials and supplies to all involved in planning and operation of natural resource activities.
