Film Permission Slip
As a part of our curriculum on African American studies and Social Justice, we plan to view 12 Years a Slave in class. As this is a rated “R” film, please sign and return the permission form to allow your student to view. All students without signed slips will be completing an alternative assignment, completing a reading on the history of slavery, Solomon Northrup, and writing a paper.
Some information on the film:
- Based on the autobiography of the same name, written by Solomon Northrup in the 1850s.
- Academy award winner for “Best Picture of the Year” in 2013.
- Recommended curriculum by the Nation School Board Association.
Student will be completing a viewing guide during the film, and comparing the story to the 1853 NY Times article about the real events, as well as critiquing the first-hand depictions of slavery. This is mature content, but in a very meaningful way, so I encourage you to view it on your own or visit IMDB to view the Parent’s Guide on content if you have concerns. Please sign below and return by Thursday, December 10th to consent. Thank you.
