“Elements of Literature” FLIP BOOK PROJECT

OBJECTIVE: To apply students’ knowledge of the literary elements by being able to correctly analyze the text of a story and determine what elementsare being used by the author. Students will create a flip book that will match each element’s definition with the text evidence from the novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS:

1)Create the flip book by overlapping 4 pieces of copy paper and folding them in half to create a 6-page flip book. You may use colored paper.

2)The top page will be the cover page to include the following information:

Title: “The Elements of Literature” featuring JohnSteinbeck’s The Pearl, Student’s Name, and Period #.

3)***Each page will consist of 2 main parts. (Part 1) Write the definition of each element from your notes, and (Part 2) provide text evidence example(s) from The Pearl that demonstrate(s) the element.***

4)Be sure each entry is NEATLY WRITTEN and COLORFULLY DESIGNED.

ELEMENTS SECTIONS INSTRUCTIONS:

1)Setting: Write 1 text evidence sentence that proves time AND 1 text evidence sentence that proves place.

2)Figurative Language: 1 simile/1 metaphor/ 1 of another type. Provide their literal meanings.

3)Theme: Complete these sentences:

(1) The theme of The Pearl is ______.

(2)This is shown in the story when…______.

4)Characterization: Write 4 text evidence sentence that shows how Steinbeck develops his characters. Each of the following should have their own example:

  1. physical description c. what others think of the character
  2. actions, thoughts, or speech d. author’s thoughts about the character

Clearly label each item and explain what the reader can infer from Steinbeck’s characterization.

5)Irony: Identify one example of Verbal, one example of Situational irony, and one example of Dramatic. Support with text evidence, AND in your own words, explain why the words or situation is ironic.

6)Conflict: Give one example each of Internal (Man vs. himself), External (Man vs. Man), External (Man vs. Society), and External (Man vs. Nature), and use 1 sentence of text evidence for each of the four types of conflict.

7)Plot: Write a bulleted list of key events within the story. Exposition (1-2 sentences.), Inciting Incident (1 sent.), Rising Action (3-4 sent.), Climax (1 sent.), FA/RES (1 sent.) – USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!
