  • I can use the correct noun and verb agreement in a sentence. This means if the noun is singular, the verb is plural. If the noun is plural, the verb is singular.
  • I can read on-level texts with purpose and understanding.
  • I can identify complete sentences in writing and when spoken. (incorporated into writing time)
  • I can spell common word patterns and sight words.

Day 1 Instructional Activities:
HOT Question: Write a rule for when you think you should use –es and when you should use –s when making words plural.
  • DOL/Writing – My favorite part of Christmas break was….
  • Spelling – introduction to words, PowerPoint from Walke’s Web (discuss the definitions and similar sounds of the words). Put words into categories.
  • Reading – Listen to audio of Jan’s New Home. Discussion of words that are unfamiliar (point to the word…becomes, everything, nothing).
  • Phonics – Plural Words sheet
  • Grammar – Review Verbs (Grammaropolis)

Day 2 Instructional Activities:
HOT Question: What if we didn’t have plural words? How would we know if there were more than one of something?
  • DOL/Writing – My favorite thing to do on a snowy day is….
  • Spelling – Pick 5 words that look the most difficult andcircle them on their homework sheet so that they know to pay more attention to them while studying this week (individually) and have them to write those word 5 times each.
  • Reading – Teacher reads the story to the class and leaves out various words and they should fill in the words that she misses.
  • Phonics–Gnome fishing game (choose –es and “hook” your gnome a plural match!)
  • Grammar – Class Verb List (Action words)

Day 3 Instructional Activities:
HOT Question: What is the Moral of Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel?
  • DOL/Writing—Have you ever moved? Write about it! If not, write about a friend or family member that has moved.
  • Spelling – Write words 3x each
  • Phonics – pg. 38 What do you do when there is more than one? Adding
–s and –es
  • Reading – Read Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee
Burton.
Discuss plot and the idea of beginning, middle, and end. Have students complete the BME organizer. (a piece of paper folded “hotdog style” with three flaps cut into it)
  • Grammar – Verb Game (Choose the verb in each sentence to gain your monkey a scoop of ice cream)

Day 4 Instructional Activities:
HOT Question: What solution would you come up with if you were Stellaluna and you didn’t want to eat what your mother gave you?
  • DOL/Writing–What are the first five things that you put in your suitcase if you were moving?
  • Spelling- Review words with Spelling City and give the practice spelling test
  • Phonics –watch and play Pond Plurals
  • Reading – Read Stellaluna and complete the character and setting chart.
  • Grammar – Angry Verbs (Each student is given an angry bird to print a verb of their choice on. They will then color the bird and I will put them on a bulletin board for display)

Day 5 Instructional Activities:
HOT Question: Did you like reading The Snowy Day? Why? What was your favorite part? What would you do differently?
  • DOL/Writing Prompt – Write a letter to a friend that has moved or that you have moved away from.
  • Spelling Test
  • Reading Mastery Test
  • Read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and complete the BME sled organizer.
