Bongos Week Six - 11

Hello E in C

“Learning through Play” PEM

You may have noticed that children are little scientists. They essentially teach themselves by using their five senses to explore the world around them and then experiment with the information. The rich environment we create together in class opens up new musical-play possibilities for children. For example, the Music Together song collections are musically rich and include a wide variety of meters and tonalities. We don’t try to label these for the child or teach them concepts about music, but instead provide an immediate, direct experience, which the child can then use as the basis for play. (see vid for an example) At home, continue to provide your child with a variety of music experiences to draw from. Play and sing all kinds of music—jazz, classical, folk, multi-cultural, the current Music Together song collection—whatever you enjoy.

Mountain Dew – High C in F major (FAC)

  • Play with sounds using our voice. Can introduce the idea of “mouth music” to the group – like Jazz play here. For your reference: Mouth Music can be found in various forms throughout the world, but it is highly developed among the Gaels. It became part of the musical baggage of Scottish and Irish emigrants and travelled with them to Nova Scotia and down into the southern Appalachians. The term "mouth music" is likely to be a translation of the Scots-Gaelic "port-a-beul" ("tunes from the mouth"). It is sometimes sung with sparse instrumental accompaniment (bones, bells, drums) but is mostly unaccompanied. It was used as dance music and to make work lighter.
  • Sing one Skiddle verse, one La La inviting group to sing (get tune in head), then invite to sing tune with any silly playful sounds they want. All with alternating pash action.
  • We’re getting off the ground and we’re walking all around
  • We’re kicking up some leaves that are falling from the trees
  • We’re stomping on the ground (slow and big) and giving it a pound
  • We’re jumping up and down and we’re turning all around
  • Reaching up high and we’re gonna touch the sky
  • We’re jumping up and down and we’re turning all around
  • We’re wiggling around, yeah we’re wiggling around
