A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JAMES RICHARD JONES, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY COMMITMENT TO HIS COMMUNITY AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST IN THE COMING YEARS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina Senate honors those individuals who give of their time and energy in benefit of their surrounding communities, ultimately making South Carolina a better place to work and live; and

Whereas, James Richard Jones led an honorable career as a Master Parachutist in the United States Army, retiring as a decorated war veteran who served in both the Pacific and European Theatres in World War II; and

Whereas, after completing his time in the Army, he worked for the South Carolina Department of Emergency Preparedness and retired as a deputy director of the agency; and

Whereas, a devoted husband and father, Mr. Jones shares a loving marriage with his wife, Louise, and adores his four children, three grandsons, and four greatgrandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Jones has remained extraordinarily active during his second retirement, devoting himself to the service of others by participating in various volunteer activities, including the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross, Camp Kemo, Habitat for Humanity, Crisis Hotline, and Celebrate Freedom; and

Whereas, steadfast in his faith, Mr. Jones is a past president of Lutheran Brotherhood and has served as Congressional Coordinator for Thrivent for Lutherans; and

Whereas, Mr. Jones’ most significant contribution to his community has been his volunteer service at Forest Lake Elementary School, where students adoringly know him as “Grandpa Jones”, and in 2003, he was recognized by the State Board of Education as Volunteer of the Year; and

Whereas, inspiring students and faculty alike, Mr. Jones has helped organize a team of volunteers to work with first graders who were reading fluently and needed additional challenges. He also serves on the School Improvement Council and promotes an overall positive school climate; and

Whereas, on June 6, 2006, Forest Lake Elementary School will dedicate a magnolia tree on the school’s grounds in Mr. Jones’ honor, and an adjacent patio area lovingly has been given by his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren in recognition of his service; and

Whereas, Mr. Jones’ service to Forest Lake Elementary School, his nation, State, and community is by no means finished. The South Carolina Senate commends him for his many selfless acts and is confident that he will continue to touch the lives of many others in the years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor James Richard Jones, of Richland County, for his extraordinary commitment to his community and wish him all the best in the coming years.
