The St Johns SONICS is the largest and fastest growing basketball club in St Johns County. Please visit our above web site
The following contains detailed information about our various travel programs including cost and registration forms.
SONICS BASKETBALL 9U THRU 14U PHILOSOPHY
Our philosophy is to teach the players the fundamentals and skills, both mentally and physically, necessary to compete for a position on their high school basketball team. Our number one concern is to teach the players about basketball on and off the court. Winning is not a concern, however, it is important for us to teach the players what it takes to win basketball games.
SONICS BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF
The St Johns SONICS takes great pride in our coaching staff. All of our coaches have either high school, AAU coaching experience or have played at the college level. You can get a complete listing of our coaches and their backgrounds by visiting our web site at (Coming SOON)
ROSTER AND TEAM SELECTION
The St Johns SONICS will have teams at the 9U/-14U team levels for boys. We also have 9th Grade – 11th Grade boys teams with the SUNS. The St Johns SUNS Girls Teams will have 5th, 6th and 7th Grade teams. We offer an open registration process for tryouts on these AAU teams. All players that register for one of our teams will have a tryout. For those that do not make a team we have the SONIC Sessions to continue to work on the skills and drills. If we have more than one team, we will put your son/daughter on the team that we feel would benefit him/her the most. We will take into consideration your sons/daughters talent level, the teams talent level and where we think your son/daughter will play the most.
In terms of roster size, our goal is to have no more than 8-10 players on any one roster. Once again, the actual number of players will be determined by the number of players we have at each grade level. A roster will be at least 8 players and no more than 10 players.
Please note that we want players that have a desire to get better and to play high school basketball in the future. Our travel program is not a recreation type league and is meant for the serious player who wants to play high school basketball in the future. Please make sure you understand our overall philosophy, playing time philosophy, refund policy and all information in this brochure before you register.
PLAYING TIME
We believe that the best way to teach our philosophy is by giving every player adequate playing time in games. It is our goal to make this a rewarding experience for all involved. That being said, we also want to start and prepare players for what it takes to be able to play at the high school level. Playing time will be the coaches decision based on practice performance, game performance, knowledge of our system, work ethic at home and attendance. It is very important that the players learn what it will take to play at the high school level. If your son works hard in practice, works hard in games, knows the system, is working on his game at home and attends all the practices, he will get a good amount of playing time. If there are weaknesses in any of these areas, he will not play as much as others. We do guarantee that your son will play in every game we play in but the amount of playing time is not guaranteed.
SEASON LENGTH
The St Johns SONICS will now run three different sessions. We have the Spring Season consisting of ELITE AAU, LOCAL AAU and SONICS SESSIONs. Players are welcome to register for one season or one AAU and SONICS Sessions.
the Spring SONICS Sessions will run from March 9th – May 27th Monday and Wednesday nights 1:00 to 1:30 per session. AAU will start for both March 15-th and end June 15th.
PRACTICE
During the season, all teams will practice one to two times a week (two practices most weeks but there will be occasions where we only go once). We run our practices like a high school team would but we scale it down based on the teams age and talent level. All levels will have a mix of team and fundamental work.
We will practice out of various gyms depending on the season you sign up for. They include the Patriot Oaks Academy, Bartram Trail High School, Creekside High School, Switzerland Point Middle School, Fruit Cove Middle and Creekside Christian Church. Plus we will utilize the outdoor courts at Bartram , Veterans park and South Hampton Community courts.
We do our best to try to keep each teams practices on the same days and location of each week, however, this is not always possible. Our gym time is based on availability but we will do our best to keep it consistent.
Team Practices will be held on Tuesday and/or Thursday at Patriot Oaks Academy.
GAMES & TOURNAMENTS
We believe that the best way to get better is by playing the best possible schedule we can but at the same time not overwhelming the players. It is our philosophy that you get better by playing tough competition rather than winning by 20 every game.
For the Spring AAU Season, every team will be guaranteed 6 tournaments. We will play in one to two tournaments a month. All games are within 45 minutes of the anywhere in NE Florida for the Local AAU teams and we will travel to Savannah, Gainesville and Orlando with the Elite AAU Teams plus stay local too.
