Basic Skills, Genre, and Fiction as Dream
A writer has to be passionate about reading and writing I order to be a good writer.[BDW1]In the essay “Basic Skills, Genre, and Fiction as Dream,” by John Gardner, Gardner discusses many importance’s, speculations and guidelines of fiction writing[BDW2]. For anyone to be a writer, they have to learn to write well, or they are most likely going to be unsuccessful to certain lengths. Literature has to be taken seriously by anyone that wants to be a writer and this essay contains a few pointers that can possibly help even the most mediocre of writers[BDW3] to become better and maybe even successful.
Gardner states that in order to be a great writer, the hopeful writer has to be educated in different styles of writing, rhetoric and several types of literature. This can be disagreed upon, but people should ask themselves, how just anyone could become a great writer[BDW4]. Education is needed, even if its just reading for self pleasure, so that any persons writing can go from plain and simple, to interesting and complex. Without the knowledge of different styles of writing, a fiction story will have little chance of being any good in its raw form.
Many people would also disagree with the fact that description could make any writing better[BDW5]. If there is no deep/intense description, a story would not be enjoyable for anyone. Its interesting that Gardner compares being a writer to professional athlete. Being a pro athlete requires a passion and dedication, and not everyone can be one, just like a writer. Not everyone has the talent to be a writer and if they have the passion and dedication for it, they can make themselves better[BDW6].[BDW7]
Also, a writer has to create a dream with his/her story so that the reader can picture the things that are happening in the story. This requires the writer to put feelings into the story in a subtle way so the reader doesn’t notice that they are doing this, and that is what the writer wants. By a writer transferring emotions into a fictional story, any reader can get more into reading the piece of literature and like the writer more than if none of this was added. Writers have to understand this and use their emotions, according to Gardner, in order to make a fictional piece better.
A writer has to be passionate about reading and writing I order to be a good writer. In “Basic Skills, Genre, and Fiction as Dream,” John Gardner discusses many different points about writing and what it takes to be a great fictional writer. Gardner shows readers that without passion, dedication, feelings, and a good understanding of literature, not just anyone can be a great writer. Take time to do the things that need to be done in order to be a great writer and things can open up, which can allow many people to become a better writer. [BDW8]
