Trimester 1:

Short Stories and Novels

Picture books and literary techniques (1 week)

Short Stories (2 weeks)

Group Short Story Project (2 weeks)

Imaginative Writing: Short Story (1 week)

Novel: Bless Me Ultima (3 weeks)

Expository Writing (1 week)

Novel: Tristan and Iseult or Lord of the Flies (3 weeks)

Independent Reading: at least 400 pages—Fiction (students’ choice). You will complete a reading journal that includes entries for summary and response. You should write one entry for every 20 pages for a total of 20 entries. Each entry will be worth 10 points for a total of 200 points.

Trimester 2:
Drama and Poetry

One Act Plays: We will read several one-act plays

Persuasive Writing (1 week)

Shakespearean Play: Much Ado About Nothing (4 weeks)

Expository Writing (1 week)

Poetry: Students will learn different forms of poetry and they will be required to write their own examples of these forms and then to create a poetry notebook. (4 weeks)

Trimester 3:

Nonfiction and Historical Fiction

Narrative Writing (1 week)

Nonfiction essays (2 weeks)

Autobiography: Night by Elie Wiesel (3 weeks)

Research Writing (1 Week)

Historical Fiction: The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat (4 weeks)
