General Purpose of the Job:

The custodian is responsible for caring for the physical structure of the church in order to create a hospitable environment. Duties will require approximately ten hours of work per week.

Essential Duties:

1.) Cleans carpets as needed and performs a major all-building carpet cleaning each summer when

preschoolis not in session. Usesan electric carpet cleaning machine.

2.) Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, etc. for events. Follows written and verbal instructions from the

supervisor and/or event coordinatorsfor setting up special events.

3.) Replaces light bulbs by using a step ladder if needed.

4.) Provides regular maintenance to water softener. Monitors and refills the water softener tank as needed.
5.) Removes cob webs from high areas as needed.

6.) Empties cigarette butts from outside containers regularly.

7.) Cleans closets and maintenance rooms regularly.

8.) Identifiesmaintenance type problems/repairs and reports themin writingto the supervisor.
9.) Makes small repairs and does minor maintenance work as needed. This work could be identified by the

staff or by own observation.

10.) Performs ongoing cleaning of the building as outlined by the attached, detailed spreadsheet.

11.) Other duties as assigned by the Administrator

Working Relationships:

This position reports to the Church Administrator. Does not supervise anyone but must communicate problems found to the supervisor or to a member of the Property Board.

Skill and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and must be able to speak, write and read English.
  • Requires custodial skills including cleaning, maintenance and repair, and event set up. A minimum of 2 years custodial experience is desired.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work without close supervision.
  • Must be flexible regarding work schedule, able to schedule work times to meet the needs of church.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize duties.
  • Must have good communication skills, including the ability to report maintenance needs in writing
  • Must interact and relate to members, staff, outside group members and visitors in a positive, pleasant and helpful way.

Job Title: Custodian part time

Physical Demands:

This individual must be able to handle normal cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, scrubbers and carpet cleaners. Must be able to use hand tools (screw drivers, hammer etc. to perform small maintenance duties). Must be able to climb a step ladder to perform small maintenance and cleaning tasks. Must be able to lift50 lbs. (tables, supplies, and softener salt) regularly.

Mental Demands:

Duties are semi-routine requiring incumbent to follow written and verbal instructions from the supervisor, to follow established procedures, to understand product and equipment instructions,and also to utilize self-initiative, judgment and independent thinking when variations and problems arise.
