The teachers and staff of S. Gordon Stewart Middle School are excited to begin the registration process for your upcoming 6th grader. Please read the information carefully and follow the directions for completing the form and meeting the required deadlines.

In 6th grade, each student will take a set of core academic classes including language arts, reading, social studies, science, and math. These courses will be scheduled automatically. 6th grade students will also have daily health, physical education, and Power Up opportunities that will also be scheduled automatically. (Note: Students having special education services and classes will be scheduled according to Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements.)

On this form, students will register for 6th grade exploratory classes. Sixth grade students have one period of exploratory classes each day. Students may take either Beginning Band, which is a yearlong course, or the Exploratory Rotation, where each of six classes is six weeks in length. A brief description of beginning band and the exploratory rotation classes is attached.

Registration forms must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the elementary school by Wednesday, April 10.

To register for exploratory classes, students must choose either Beginning Band or the Exploratory Rotation. Please circle one option.

6th Grade Course Descriptions

Beginning Band

This course is designed for students who have not had any band experience. Instruction will include learning basics of instrument care and maintenance, producing a musical sound, and playing in an organized ensemble. Students begin studying instruments that will prepare them for 7th and 8th grade band as well as High School Band. Course activities include winter and spring concerts. This is a yearlong course.

Exploratory Rotation

Students choosing the exploratory rotation will take each of these courses during the school year. Each course will be six weeks long. These courses will be taken in the order selected by computer scheduling.

Fun with Music

This course provides an introduction to choral singing, Orff Ensemble and folkdance. Students will study part singing using folk songs from various parts of the world. They will sing these folk songs in canon and pair them to create partner songs. Students will learn to keep a steady beat and play multiple parts using the Orff instruments. Students will also take a closer look at folkdance, as it has been a tool used for generations to bring people together in a spirit of celebration and respect for one another.

Art

This course introduces students to various projects that use a variety of art media and techniques. Projects include drawing, painting, collage, and clay. All of these projects include lessons about the Elements of Art. Students are also introduced to different artists who relate to each work of art they create.

Keyboarding

This course is designed for six grade students to have the opportunity to develop and enhance touch skills for entering alphabetic, numeric, and symbol information on a keyboard. Students compose and produce personal, educational, and professional documents while creating fun things on the computer.

Family & Consumer Sciences

This course provides an opportunity for students to explore topics in Family and Consumer Science. Students will learn basic kitchen skills, sewing skills and explore family and self-improvement issues. Students will make simple recipes and a hand sewing project.

Introduction to Agriscience

Students will be introduced to Agriculture, FFA, Career Exploration, Plant Science and Agricultural Mechanics. Students will use hand woodworking tools to construct a note holder.

Introduction to Technology

This course explores the role of technology in our world. Students study technology in relation to communication, construction, and production in society. Students will learn the importance of simple machines in our world and how they are used on a daily basis. Students can also become members of the Technology Students Association (TSA). Projects include building paper and balsa gliders, paper rockets, Lego/K’Nex building sets, and other projects that can be used in TSA competitions.
