Thank you for your interest in a post at York High School. This is both an exciting opportunity to join a forward-looking, inspirational school and a chance for you to make a real difference as part of the YHS Technology Team.

York High is a mixed 11–16 school serving a genuinely comprehensive intake. We have an absolute commitment to inclusion and making a difference to the life chances of all our students. Our new building and committed team of staff have enabled us to transform the expectations of our young people and their community in the last 8 years. This has been reflected in our results which represent excellent progress for our young people in many subjects given their starting points. It is also reflected in the number of families applying for places at our school. We are, however, not complacent. In a changing educational environment and from our own self-evaluation, we know there is much to do.

We are seeking to appoint colleagues who share our sense of excitement and belief in the success of our school and our vision for the future. This includes the expectation of at least good teaching and learning and an environment where colleagues work to the highest standards of professionalism. Our teachers prepare, teach, mark, assess and contribute to the development of our young people in a rigorous, creative and effective way. Our support staff are talented and valued individuals who have the skills and commitment to work alongside teachers and young people in a way that ensures they are contributing to the enhancement of our provision.

MISSION STATEMENT

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT YORKHIGH SCHOOL

YorkHigh School is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 800 pupils which opened in September 2007. In January 2009, we moved to our site on Cornlands Road where we are housed in an £18 million school and leisure facility fit for purpose in the 21st century.

As a former Specialist Sports College, we work in partnership with the local authority, ensuring our school and buildings are at the heart of its community. We have excellent sports facilities on site including climbing centre, fitness suite, dance studio, sports hall and all weather pitch, as well as our 6 lane swimming, learner and hydrotherapy pools.Our drama and recording studios, well-appointed classrooms, modern learning resource centre, excellent ICT facilities, café style catering amenity, and central atrium offer our pupils the very best environment in which to learn and develop as individuals and as a school community.

Our students make good academic progress given their starting points and in spite of disappointing results in 2015 our results improved in 2016 and we are confident that outcomes will improve significantly over the next few years. We are committed to maximising the progress of all our students whatever their abilities.

YorkHigh School is committed to using international links to raise aspirations and broaden the experiences of young people. We have links with schools in Tanzania, Uganda andHolland, and we used the 2012 Olympics to become the lead school in York for the International Inspirations Programmes. This year we are supportingresidential trips to France, Belgium, Spain and Italy. We want our pupils to understand, and experience first hand, the importance of our global community and the contribution they can make as citizens in a rapidly changing world.

Our school is situated on the west side of the historic city of York and is part of the City of York Local Authority which is small but very successful. Schools across the city work together in community and learning partnerships. We work closely with our partner primary schools in the West of the City and YorkHigh School is making an increasing contribution to the development of other schools at a local, regional and national level.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people is a key priority at YorkHigh School.

We have robust Child Protection and Safeguarding Policies and all staff receives training relevant to their role in line with the policy at induction, and throughout their employment at the school.

YHS Technology

Team and Roles

The Technology department at York High School is composed of 9 motivated and enthusiastic team members consisting of 6 Subject Teachers including the Subject Leader who is a Technology specialist. The team is supported by 3 experienced and knowledgeable Technicians.

Building and Resources

The department is housed on 2 floors with classrooms and shared areas clustered together. DT, Resistant Materials, Graphics and Art are on the ground floor with Food and Textiles above on the 1st floor.

The department is well resourced with a good range of tools and equipment and access to modern ICT and CADCAM facilities. There is a substantial range of specialist software on the school network to assist in the delivery of subject areas and development of coursework projects.

Curriculum Vision

During KS3 all pupils are taught in mixed ability groups, which are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure a good balance is maintained. At the end of KS3, pupils are placed in teaching groups according to option choices, staff availability and KS3 results. At KS4,

the majority of pupils are entered for the AQA suite of GCSE specifications.

All groups follow a plan to ensure course coverage, including time allocated to coursework and exam preparation throughout the Key Stage.

CPD Opportunities

The Technology department is committed to CPD. All efforts will be made to support the successful candidate in his/her personal development with training in modern practices. Faculty members are encouraged to discuss personal CPD needs at their annual reviews
