Luke 7:2-10 - THE SOLDIER’S FAITH

Several occasions in the New Testament where centurions are presented showing uncommon intelligence and faith in God. The text is one that gives us a few lessons for today from an unusual set of circumstances.

I. The Meeting Which Never Happened

A. Verse 3- centurion heard of Jesus, sent Jewish elders

1. Verse 4 - made earnest entreaty – centurion was “worthy”

B. Verse 6 - The centurion sent friends, not to trouble Jesus

1. Verses 7-8 - Centurion understood authority

a. the ability to command, and he trusted it

C. Verse 9 - declared him faithful without ever meeting him

II. What Do We Learn From This Soldier?

A. When you need help – get help

1. Proverbs 3:5; 1:5; 11:14; 20:18

2. What stops us? …..

a. pride – Proverbs 29:23 (never sinned? Romans 3:23)

b. shame – 2 Corinthians 2:6-8

c. discouragement/depression – 1 Kings 19:9 (not thinking clearly

B. ...get good help

1. Psalm 1:1 – Not in counsel, actions, or speech

a. peers – 1 Kings 12:8, divination – 2 Corinthians 5:7

2. Proverbs 13:20; 24:6 The key to good help?

a. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – God’s word

b. Romans 8:28 – faith

c. elders, counselors, Christians

C. ...don’t take advantage (victim mentality)

1. Galatians 6:2, 4-6 – Bearing own burden, 1 Timothy 5:8, 16

2. Do all you are able – Proverbs 12:15

D. Real faith will pay off

1. Healing the slave, 2 Timothy 1:12; 1 Peter 1:3-4

III. Do You Have A Soldier’s Faith?

A. Understand God’s authority?

B. Trust that His way is right?

C. Willing to do what you’re able?
