Judson Center, a premier non-profit human services organization, has been providing compassionate and comprehensive services for children and families in need throughout Southeast Michigan since 1924. During that time we’ve grown beyond our initial mission as a children’s home to encompass adoption, foster care and family preservation services, autism treatment, residential living and vocational services for developmentally disabled adults and mental health counseling and services.
The goal of the Respite Care Program is to provide relief for families that keep and care for their children with disabilities at home. During this relief period, guest consumers are cared for in a home environment where their physical, emotional, and social needs are met through 24-hour care and supervision. This position is in Judson’s Macomb Respite Home located in New Baltimore.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of a Direct Care Worker are to monitor and assist all consumers at their required level of supervision, provide consumers with emotional support and personal assistance, and maintain a clean and safe environment for consumers who are in the care of the agency. Other responsibilities include:
· Develop and retain familiarity with program operating policies and procedures and ensure compliance throughout designated shift.
· Responsible for required shift documentation and record keeping in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
· Comply with Medicaid and licensing standards and requirements.
· Ensure safety of all consumers.
· Assist consumers with daily life skills and recreational activities.
· Follow the consumer’s family plan concerning self-care skills such as toileting, washing, dressing, eating, and personal hygiene.
· Teach and support consumers in the areas of good health habits, grooming, and social manners.
· Transport consumers as necessary in agency vehicles.
Qualifications
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Good interpersonal and communication skills.
· Must have a positive attitude.
· Capable of working in a stressed filled environment while maintaining composure.
· Good understanding of the emotional and physical needs of developmentally disabled children and adults.
· Experience providing direct care service to children and adults with a variety of disabilities is a plus.
· Valid Michigan driver’s license and ability to drive a 12 to 15 passenger van.
· This position requires pre-service and ongoing training.
· Good verbal and written communication skills.

Working Environment
· Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 lbs of weight.
· Frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching.
· Standing for long periods of time.
· Work environment varies between indoor and outdoor activities.
· Work with a variety of consumer acting-out behaviors and aggression.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule including on-call and weekends in a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week environment.
