Evidence of God in Student Writings

English teacher Mrs. Renaud was grading papers recently and could not help but share student writings with the faculty. She stated, “I've been reminded through their papers that God is alive and at work in our students! They are learning incredible life lessons through a variety of experiences, and we get to be a part of that. What a privilege we share!”

Quotes from three student papers:

“And there they were—those stars. I looked at each one of them in awe. Whenever there is so much of God’s beauty around me, I just have to sing. So I did that, quietly, though…. Right after I finished singing those words, a shooting star shot across the sky. I felt as though God did that on purpose to show me how big He is.”

“That moment, standing there in the chapel, on the middle of the stage, crying and holding my siblings was the most beautiful moment of my entire life. …… it was just me and my siblings and the beautiful, powerful presence of God.”

“The pastor gave me a look. I gave him a look. We smiled. I darted into the ocean and was baptized. Something changed in me that week. Whatever I was, whatever I had done prior to that week was old news. I was new and alive in my Savior. I guess now I have a true understanding of what faith is, and what Christ can really do for those who pursue him.”

Yes, Mrs. Renaud, God is working in the lives of our students.

Students and teachers have been busy preparing for the fourth annual Winterim at PCHS this coming January. Seventy five juniors and seniors have chosen to do internships at local businesses and organizations! Forty-two students will be traveling for Winterim to Costa Rica, Haiti, Washington, DC, and Rehoboth, New Mexico. These students will see not only new places, but will engage in a variety of service projects. The remaining 150 students are busy choosing from a menu of Winterim classes. On October 21 students will attend a Winterim Fair in which they hear about classes from PCHS teachers, and also several parent, constituent, and community area teachers. Classes this year will include service project classes, outdoors-type classes, a class on Chinese culture, sign language class, an emergency response management class, some cooking classes, and some biblical identity classes - over 25 choices in all! Just a reminder that attire for the Christmas Banquet is recommended to simply be Sunday best. Students should dress up a bit and look nice but stay within the same guidelines as the school dress code with a couple of differences. Here is the board-set policy for dress guidelines. Moms and girls may always bring in a dress for approval at the school office prior to the event if you are in doubt.

·Dresses need to be at least knee length with no slits higher than knee length.

· The top of the dress may not show any cleavage when standing up or bending forward.

·The back of the dresses may not come below one inch under the shoulder blades.

·Dresses may not have any holes or see-through areas that show any cleavage, stomach, lower back or any part of the leg above the knee.

·Lace-up dresses: the laces must come together with no gaps or there must be a privacy panel to cover up the back.

Christian Service Hours Program Pella Christian High School implemented a Christian Service Program in 2014 where students are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of service per year. As a response to the great gift of salvation, freely given to us through Jesus Christ, Christians are called to live a life of service for God. We want all of our students at PC to experience the joy of serving others and although many of them already get these experiences through excellent youth group and family provided opportunities, others may need a little more prodding out of their comfort zone into new experiences. An individual service hour requirement may allow students to take ownership and explore service opportunities that meet their personal gifts and interests and the needs of individuals and agencies that can use assistance. Our ultimate goal is that Pella Christian graduates will make Kingdom service a life habit. The Christian Service Program details can be found on the school website under the Student tab. Here you will find the procedure for turning in the hours, the form needed, and a list of what would and would not qualify for service hours.

Dollars for Scholars

Pella Dollars for Scholars continues to assistPella Christian and Pella Community high school graduateswith scholarships for post-secondary education, but we need your help! September marks the beginning of our appeal to raise money for our general fund. Themajority of our scholarships are paid for by private donors who remain committed to the cause of continuing education, and money is safely set aside to fill that commitment. But Pella DFS also contributesabout $10,000 each year for “Honors” scholarships from our general funds, ensuring that a minimum $250 scholarshipisavailable to every senior graduating from Pella schools. In addition, our operating expenses each year average between $3,500 and $5,500. Your gift, no matter how large or small will be greatly appreciated and help us continue our mission to, “engage a community partnership to assure graduates ofPella Community High School and Pella Christian High School receive financial support for post-secondary education.” Join this community partnership by visiting pella.dollarsforscholars.org to make a contribution, to set up a designated scholarship or to find out more or mail your contribution to Pella DFS, PO Box 131, Pella, IA 50219.

Notice: Corporal Punishment, Restraint, and Physical Confinement and Detention

We are required by Iowa Code to provide you with this information each year.

State law forbids school employees from using corporal punishment against any student. Certain actions by school employees are not considered corporal punishment.Additionally, school employees may use “reasonable and necessary force, not designed or intended to cause pain” to do certain things, such as prevent harm to persons or property.

State law also places limits on school employees’ abilities to restrain or confine and detain any student. The law limits why, how, where, and for how long a school employee may restrain or confine and detain a child. If a child is restrained or confined and detained, the school must maintain documentation and must provide certain types of notice to the child’s parent. If you have any questions about this state law, please contact Clyde Rinsema. The complete text of the law and additional information is available on the Iowa Department of Education’s web site: www.iowa.gov/educate.
