Word & Excel with Financial Management

Course Overview

Students will develop the skills to utilize word processing and spreadsheet applications. Industry standard software package used in this course

is Microsoft Office 2007(Word and Excel). Students taking this course will be given the opportunity to sit for the MCAS (Microsoft

Certified Application Specialist) Proficiency Word and Excel Certification Exam. This course prepares students for a wide variety of career

opportunities.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

·  Use word processing software when working with text, paragraphs, documents, files, and tables to produce, edit, and customize multipage documents.

·  Design, create, produce, and use spreadsheets for forecasting purposes.

·  Display, organize, sort, and analyze information using spreadsheets when working with cells, files, worksheets, workbooks, formula/functions, charts, and objects.

·  Apply the appropriate software when creating financial and business documents.

·  Demonstrate knowledge of acceptable values and behaviors to become ethically responsible computer users

·  Integrate with other applications to formulate, enter, and manipulate data.

·  Identify computer-related careers to better understand the applications of computer skills necessary in various information technology fields.

·  Use technology strategically to enhance productivity and creativity to manage financial information using a variety of technology tools.

Course Materials

Textbook – Microsoft Office 2007: Real World Applications by Schultz and Wooldridge.

In addition to the textbook, students will be using resources on the Internet. All students must have an Internet User Agreement form on file in order to participate in these activities.

Students are required to provide the following:

·  Writing utensil

·  Flash drive

Classroom Expectations

Throughout the course, students will be expected to:

·  exhibit proper attitudes

·  be in their seats working on the assigned daily warm-up when the tardy bell rings

·  organize work

·  prepare and clean work area

·  respect one another, the property of others, and the property/equipment in the classroom

·  take responsibility for their actions

·  manage time and set priorities

·  complete ALL assignments on time

·  comply with Computer Lab Rules in regard to Internet usage and food and drink

·  NOT use the chairs to roll across the room

Restroom/Water Fountain/Locker/Health Room

Any student who must leave class during the Block for ANY reason, must have a HALL PASS! Without it, permission to leave class will not be granted. Students are expected to complete the information on the pass and then present to Mrs. Shockey for a signature. Students are required to complete the sign in/out sheet upon returning to class. At the end of the term, each unused line on the Hall Pass will be granted 5 extra credit points.

Attendance Policy/Make Up Work

Students are expected to follow FCPS policy on attendance. If you are absent from school for a legal reason, it is your responsibility to get any work you missed. This includes daily warm-ups as well as assignments/activities. Make-up work may be done before or after school.

The following late policy will be implemented for work not submitted by due dates:

v  10% deducted for each school day work is not turned in

ü  1 day late = 90%

ü  2 days late = 80%

Honor Code

Dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a phone call/office referral and NO CREDIT on the assignment. This applies to both parties involved. Examples include: copying work from another person and passing it off as your own, sharing of files, and copying answers from another’s homework, test, and/or quiz.

Evaluation

Evaluation for the course will be based on a point system using rubrics. A rubric is a scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work or “what counts.” Each student will receive a rubric for assignments. Students are expected to complete a rubric of their own work before submitting to Mrs. Shockey. Any assignment not submitted with a scored rubric will not be graded and returned to the student.

The following will be used in the calculation of grades:

·  quizzes (both announced and unannounced)

·  tests

·  warm-ups

·  textbook activities

·  class work assignments

The following scale will be used:

A = 90-100

B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79

D = 60 – 69

F = 59 or below

Electronic Devices and Cellular Telephones

Electronic devices, such as iPods, MP3 Players, CD Players, etc. and cell phones are not permitted in the classroom during the school day. These devices should be powered off and out of sight.

All students will receive warning of this school rule on Day 1 over the PA. This is the initial warning!

The following consequences will occur if any of the above mentioned devices are out during a class period:

1st incident: item is confiscated, turned into the main office where student may retrieve at the END of the school day

2nd incident: item is confiscated, turned into the main office where student may not retrieve until parents/guardians are called
